Shepherd BLM Area

Trails were created by motorcycle so it is very wide single track. Lots of rolling climbs and fun decents. Not much very technical so it can be a very fast track. It is primarily a loop but there are lots of little trails that go into the middle where it can get more technical. From the parking lot you can go left, straigt or right. Clockwise rides have a few short, steep climbs to begin and then a long rolling decent in the back and then a moderate climb out. Going clockwise starts with a long, moderate decent and then a long climb in the back and then short climbs back to the parking lot. It is still ridden by motorcycles and ATVs (mostly on the weekend) so be careful.

Summary:
The trail is easy to find, and worth the 25 mins. to get there from Billings. True experts might get bored, but for most riders there is something for everyone. Most of the trails are made for atvs so they are wide enough for two riders. It's a great race set up as you can pass almost anywhere. You can get some serious speed but you have to be carfull, because some of the trails drop out fast, leaving you with a 20-25 foot drop,if you are going fast enough. For the most part you can spot these drops in time, even if your haulin'. Some of the motorcycle riders are pricks, but if you get there early enough there not a problem. I've been out there with 20 mototrcyles and not had problem. My entire family has ridden out there, ages ranging from 8 to 36, and everyone had fun.

Recommended Route:
I like going clockwise, but there really isn't a recommended route.

Summary:
This trail is not very technical in nature, but the short, steep climbs and rolling descents will test your aerobic fitness and make your legs burn. Riding is best in the early mornings while it is still cool and before the ATVs and motorcycles arrive. Some of the short downhills allow you to reach speeds in excess of 30 mph (if you want) and will test your ability to handle your bike. I prefer to ride in a clockwise direction because it offers more downhills in the middle of the ride, and the climb out is not as taxing as the short climbs in the beginning. Usually this will keep you fresh for one or two more loops, taking some alternate routes along the way for a change in scenery. The trail is wide enough that it is ideal for novice and experienced riders. Ride at a pace that is comfortable and that you can maintain. There is plenty of room to stop and rest if you need to. Bring extra water if you plan to ride for an extended period of time as there is no water on the public land. The trail is mostly semi-hard packed clay loam with certain areas being relatively soft, almost sandy, especially some of the short climbs. There is some timber and sagebrush. Watch for livestock in the summer. If it has rained and the trail is extremely muddy use caution as the mud is extremely slick and gums up on the tires meaning lots of stops to clean off the mud.

Recommended Route:
Turn left and follow the outer loop in a clockwise direction. There a various options using this route that vary from 5.9 to 6.1 miles in length.

Summary:
Fun area. Pretty much just a motocross playground. Very easy escents and climbs. If you are in the Billings area it is a great weekend destination. It is on the local bike map and is supposed to be part of some bigger chunk of BLM land. But I couldn't find a way into the bigger part. Becareful on the long descents into the old dried creek not to go too fast, I bent my fork and had to get it replaced. But I like it. On a scale from one to ten for fun; 6 Difficulty: 4 Great for begginers!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
South Hills (Across the Yellowstone River from Billings), Zimmerman Park, Indian Cliff Trail (Off of Indian Cliff residential area) Red Lodge area (for long cheap descents)
