History Rock to South Cottonwood
1 reviews
 5 of 5

Directions:

From Bozeman drive South on 19th Street approx. 7 miles. Take the lefthand turn up Hyalite Canyon. Follow this road up approx. 10 miles and make a right hand turn into the History Rock Trailhead. The trail leaves from the parking lot. For a shuttle ride, as described here, we usually leave a car at the junction of 19th Street and Hyalite Canyon Road. If you are solo, you can lock your bike here at the end of the ride and then hitchhike up the canyon to your car.

The History Rock trail almost immediately begins a 3 mile climb out of the parking lot. The first 1/2 mile is a good warmup before it becomes steep and sustained for about 2 miles to a junction. This is all cleanable, but will definetly get your heart pumping. Take a left hand turn at the junction (signed - follow the sign that says Junction w/ S. Cottonwood 2.5 miles). There is about 5-10 more minutes of steep climbing before you reach a meadow with beautiful views of Mt. Blackmore. Take a break and get ready for a rockin' descent. The first 2.5 miles are steep with technical switchbacks and small drops. About 2 miles in there is a left turn to Fox Creek Cabin. Ignore this and stay straight. It is a good challenge to clean this whole section. Once you ride across the bridge, take a right. You are now on S. Cottonwood trail. Look for a couple of log rides 100 yards up on the left. Then there is a fast section of mostly smooth, sweet singletrack until you reach the next bridge. I find the faster I pedal thru this section the more enjoyable it is! After the bridge there is quick climb before about a mile of somewhat more technical riding. When you reach the bottom of the switchbacks and the trail seems to have flattened out, look for the stream on your left. There is a wide, well worn path to it. To the right of the trail here is a fun log/boulder combo. Now there is about 4 miles of great singletrackin' left to go. This section is fast, especially if you don't mind pedaling a bit. You will cross 3 more bridges, after the last one pass thru the cattle gate, close it behind you, and begin an easy 1/4 mile section of uphill. Then there is one last downhill section of wide trail with nice, fast switchbacks before you hit the parking lot. Really watch out for horses, hikers and other bikers in the last couple of miles, especially evenings & weekends. BE COURTEOUS.

Now follow the dirt road for about a mile to the junction with pavement. Take a right at the stop sign. Ride up a short, curving hill then cruise down about another mile until you take a right on 19th Street. Follow this about 1 more mile to your car.

The bike shops do have a map with all of these trails on them, buy it, it is helpful for routefinding.

**(Most of these mileages are my estimates, but they should be pretty close.)
