St. James Hiking and Biking Trail

Average Rating:    (4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 3

New singletrack trail built by volunteers and Route 66 bike shop. Ridden clockwise you start with single track and end with gravel road for the last .25 miles. Some areas may be challenging for beginners but still very rideable for all. Not a whole lot of elevation gain and a few creek crossing.

Summary:
Finally rode this trail after hearing about it frame Dan @ Route66 Bikes in Rolla. I rode the dirt road first and came out across the street from the parking lot. Trail is about 5 miles, took me 40 minutes to do a loop. Very fast, flowy, some cool rock garden stretches and some techy little creek crossings and uphill parts to keep it interesting. Found this to be perfect for my daily lunch ride, and hope to supplant Lions Park with this trail when I've got time. 4 outta 5, keeping in mind I haven't ridden the 2 additional sections marked "higher difficulty" yet. Next time I'll ride the whole trail. Still, highly recommended.

Recommended Route:
I rode the "regular" way without any extra sections for my first go... will have to experiment in the future.

Summary:
Fast single track with great turns. Some rocky areas spread throughout length of trail. No long climbs or descents but frequent changes in elevation make it fun and fast. Numerous creek crossing add a little technical challenge. I rode on nice warm fall day and trail was challenging to follow at times due to fallen leaves; still new and blends in well. Trailhead is easy to find and very accessible from I-44. Overall, a great trail for new mountain bikers to get a great experience and for anyone who wants a fun fast ride.

Recommended Route:
Clockwise so quarter mile of gravel road at end will be uphill and more of the single-track will be downhill.

Summary:
Easy to get to and easy to ride. It does have a lot of rocks and there are creek crossings but I've mostly encountered them dry. There may be some challenging areas for beginners but they are easy to bypass.

Recommended Route:
Either way you ride it you get the same effort and it's only 5 miles. Ride it both ways!!!
