Trail of the Four Winds-Lake Ozark State Park

All singletrack, of varying difficulty. Basically a big loop, with several smaller loops connecting to it. Easy to bail out of most areas. This is Karst topography, which means ROCKY!! This trail is challenging and fast for a serious rider, but is rideable by average riders at slower speeds. There are horses sometimes, so the trail condition varies, but mostly good. Excellent for night riding. Bring water, and you will get ticks in the summer unless you never stop. This trail is what its all about: rough, fast, big hills, and silly-fast descents.
From the Hwy 54 & 42 junction, go South about 5 miles to the state park turn-off, to the right. Follow main park road about another 1 1/2 mile and look for well marked trail head on Right. Lots of gravel parking.
Summary: Just got home from riding here. Bring some off? Ha ha ha, that won't help and not stopping won't help either. I lost count how many ticks I was pulling off. I'm sure I'll find some more. I rode it counter-clock wise, don't know if it makes that much of a difference. It is rocky and there are some areas that are still pretty muddy and with the horse traffic....blah in those areas. Don't know what was up, but today there was noone except me and the ticks on this trail. Lots of ups and downs. The ups were rocky and rooty along with the mud churned up from the horses, made for a cardio kick me in the arse ride. The downs were fun as they usually always are. I only ate it once and that was my fault, riding into a bunch of leaves that was hiding a ditch. Wouldn't have happened if I had stayed on the right path but to me wrecking is part of what riding is about. Think I'll try it clock wise next time like the guys at Oz Cycles suggested.

Summary: I rode Trail of 4 Winds yesterday and it was muddy and wet! I had a blast though. It was a good ride. I will wait a couple of days after it rains to go though next time. Bring a lot of water. When you park at the TH, start on the trail that does not have a sign for TH. I got a map from the park and it was not quite acurate. I think I ended up on the yellow trail, not really sure. Watch for the horse poop and bring lots of water. Put on some OFF! too.

Summary: Four Winds is in great shape. Phat Tire Hillbillies has recently spent many hours cleaning and grooming this multi-use trail. Midwest Fat Tire Series just completed their last race of the year here and out of the 50 plus racers only one finished the 12 mile course in under on hour. Bring plenty of water and a firm grip. Dan @ Oz Cycles(573.964.7000) has maps of all the trails at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Recommended Route: Hwy 42 to 134 to the trail head on top of the hill on the right. Go down the fire road and take the first right into the trail.Have fun and enjoy all the hard work fellow mtn bikers have put in to make this the nexr best trail in Missouri.

Summary: This trail has some real technical stuff at times and I would plan to make a day of it if you intend on riding the whole thing. Also, horse damage has gotten particularly bad and that combined with recent rain makes parts of this trail unrideable. So, there is some hike-a-bike. Otherwise, there are some real fast downhills on this trail.

Summary: Worth the trip from anywhere in a 200 mile radius.
This trail offers diverse terrain features, with varying difficulty.
I believe the guy at Ozark Cyclery said it best "You'll learn a thing or two on that trail." He was right. There are some monster hills in some spots with loose rocks on the surface. Although, most of the hills allow runway at the bottom, so you don't have to worry bashing into trees. This is a very fun and fast trail. In most places the trail is wide and well-kept. There are areas where horses have really trampled. Be weary of hitting this trail after a rain, as the spots lock in the water and makes you feel like you're riding through a trough. The map that they hand out at Ozark Cycles is decent but is not very descriptive. It is printed in black and white copy, and has no landmark identification labeling. We ended up off their route quite often.. TICKS! You WILL get them on this trail. Between me and my buddy, we pulled off at least 100 of them. Long socks and bug spray will help.
Recommended Route: Get the map at Ozark Cyclery, but ask them to explain the route thoroughly. It is a good route. But, like I said previously, the map is not the easiest to follow.
