Summary:
Brought the singlespeed with me for a family Thanksgiving trip to St. Louis. Me and the b-in-law checked this trail out. My first impression as we drove into the park that it definitely was not flat. Only saw one other rider the whole time we were there. The fall leaves were out in force covering the trail to the point where you really had to be careful. Some very good climbs, good downs, and in some areas great rocky/tech singletrack. I will definitely go back, and I will prolly leave the single at home. Suspension with some gears would match this trail better.

Recommended Route:
Rode Declue, Dogwood, and Greenrock. Declue was my fave.

Summary:
The trail surface is very rocky. This is a very hilly park, and all of the trails are either going up or down for the entire length. There’s some great IMBA-standard trail on the DeClue and Dogwood loops that offers great riding, some of it in the shadow of the Six Flags rollercoasters! Due to the volume of rocky trail features this is a fairly technical place to ride. Expect a tough workout, and some sections that may require hike-a-bike (for short runs), if your skills are not up to snuff. Trail traffic often includes horses, so be careful and courteous when encountering equestrian traffic, but for the most part, this park is somewhat under-utilized and thus represents a great place to ride.

The DeClue Loop is technical and the Dogwood Loop is fast and flowy. The Dogwood Loop has been almost completely rerouted by GORC to lengthen it and bring it up to IMBA standards to prevent erosion and equestrian traffic issues. The DeClue loop is rocky and technical. If you want to "taste" Greensfelder before diving in, ride the Dogwood trail first. Total mileage for both loops is between 9-11 miles depening on the route taken.

Ridden Trail:
Once a year

Summary:
Today (11 - 19 - 2005), I rode this trail system for the first time in about 2 years. I must say I was very happy that I decided to return. They (G.O.R.C. I think?) have done a wonderful job on this trail system since I last rode it.
It has a good variety of terrain. Mostly single track. A few slightly challenging technical sections but they are just short stretches, and are over before you remind yourself to loosen your death grip on the bars. Plenty of quick downs with some swift banked turns. And a few fairly long downs as well that where fairly smooth.
The trail was totally covered with fall leaves today so not being familliar with the trail at all and not knowing for sure what I was about to hit lurking under the heavy leaves I couldnt go as fast as the long downs had the potential for but surprisingly along with many rocky sections there where a lot of very long smooth downhill switchback sections. ( I kept waiting for one of those big wall faced rocks or deep roots hiding under the soft leaves to teach me little more about the impacts on dirt vs. trees but where it smothed out it pretty much was all smooth)Next time I wont hold back.
Of course what goes down must come up. Some moderate to long climbs but none that really make your lungs scream, a few spots with large & loose rock but like I said just short sections of it. To me 98% ridable (keeping in mind that I am just a weekend warrior).
Over all a great ride. Didnt get a chance to ride all the trails.
Looked like a great place to spend the entire day, plenty of parking , picnic tables, pavilions, I think I saw BBQ pits and kids monkey bars/swings. A lot of horses around the parking lots and other non mtb trails but we only passed 2 pair on the mt bike trails we were on. and if it matters to you not too much horse crap on the trails.
The park is located at
Allenton and Hencken Roads (behind Six Flags)

Recommended Route:
We rode a trail called the "Declue" . It was marked with orange markers with a picture of a tree. Think it was about a 5-6 mile loop. Then we rode the "Dogwood" trail , marked with brown markers with a picture of a dogwood flower ( I think that is what it was) It too was a loop but about 2.5 miles long. There is at least one more mt bike trail there, not sure what it is calledthink its 2-3 miles long. Seemed to be a few other non mt bike trails as well. I hope that someone else will write a review on this trail system to give all the correct names and distances. I felt I had to write an updated review on this trail system after noticing that no one has reviewed it in a couple of years. It has improved soooo much with lots to offer.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Chubb trail (West Tyson trail Head) is just down the hwy a few exits. And in my opinion is about the best St. Louis area has to offer.
Other great trails around- Castlewood, Lost Vally, Matson, Klondike.

Summary:
Spanish Lake offers an extreme variety of riding trails. From extremely tight single track to the wide-open maintenance roads, Spanish Lake has it all. It offers something for everyone and all skill levels. It is also a single speeders dream, with not many challenging climbs. I would review it as the Castlewood, minus the Cardiac type hills, of North St. Louis County.

Summary:
I rode this trail last weekend for the first time and thought it was both yella fun and challenging. I parked in the first little lot on the left side of the rode if you were driving up from Six Flags and then headed on a trail on that same side of the road back toward Six Flags back into the forest. From there I saw the Greensfelder Memorial and started tor ride on what I thought was a 3.5 mile loop. It turned out I wound up on Foxcreek Rd. on the other side ot the park. Anyway, the trail was mostly loose rocks, covered in several inches of leaves and bumpy with sections of the trail eroded from rain runoff. The downhill sections were long and fun. I ride clipless and there were a few times were I slid of my pedals but was able to regain control. The uphill sections are tuff, you really need to know how to balance yourself just right in order to climb them. A few sections need to be hiked up unless you have superlungs.
For the trail, more signs would be helpful for the section I rode.
A good trail worth checking out. I recommend getting a map at visitors center

Recommended Route:
unfamilar with trail names

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chubb and Castlewood
