Pincusion Mountain

This place is a bunch of XC skiing trails in the winter, but when there's no snow it's usually a hardpacked single track trail with mown grass on the sides (i.e. it's fast, lots of hills, and good visibility). Depending on how fast you take the hills and whether you're confident in jumping over the occasional log the course can be fairly challenging, but if you take it slower it's a nice place for beginners too. If you get a map (you can find them on the trail sometimes and at the local ranger station), you can follow the trails to the actual Pincushion Mountain. It's worth the climbing, and it's even possible to ride your bike on the big granite top. This set of trails is also connected to the big North Shore Trail, but bikes on that is a no-no. When you cruise back into town (you probably won't have to pedal for over 3 miles or so), head into a pizza place called Sven and Oles. I reccomend the pickled herring, but the pizza is awesome for those who don't really like herring.

Trail Directions
Take the Gunflint Trail (it's a road) north outta town and up the huge hill. When you near the top, a sign will point off to the right to a scenic overlook. Park your car (unless you're a pro you'll want one to climb the hill) and get your gear ready while enjoying an awesome view of Lake Superior and downtown Grand Marais. Then, have your driver take off and arrange to meet you in the town, because the ride down the hill is bitchin'. (If you have the right gearing on your bike, it's probably possible to hit 40 to 50 mph on the way down.) The trailhead is on the north side of the dirt parking lot.

Summary:
Nice place to ride. I rode up from town (about a 2 mile climb on the Gunflint Trail), and rode the trail system for about 1 1/2 hours. If you're a biker you'll want to bike up from town. The trails are single track with a 2-3 foot mowed section on each side, wide enough for cross country skate skiing. There are good climbs for a nice aerobic workout if you want that, but it also has some beginner trails. I didn't get lost (signage was adequate) and I didn't get to the new single track. I like the mixed pine/birch/poplar forest typical of the north woods, and riding the bald top of Pincushion Mt. with its great view of blue Lake Superior. I would ride it more if I didn't live 6 hours away.
There is a donation box at the trailhead.

Summary:
As stated in previous reviews, this is a xc ski area in the winter and mtb and hiking area in the non winter months. There are some good trais and not very difficult throughout the entire trail system. Climbing the solid granite rock to get to the top of Pincussion is the best part of the entire ride. It is a spectacular view in all directions. Rumor has it there is some new single track being built within the interior of the ski area. I understand that IMBA has a hand in the development of this new single track. Check with the local Bike shop downtown to find out more info.

Recommended Route:
Follow the Gunflint trail north a couple miles out of town and look for the signs, you can't miss it. You can also ride trails right from downtown Grand Marais.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Many other trails available to ride, the LBS has the best info, thre is also a local bike club that rides at least every wednesday evening during the warmer months.

Summary:
Good trails, watch out for nasty stinging insects. Great views from parking lot and on the rock face overlooking SNF>

Recommended Route:
Take the downhill from the parking lot and head down to GM. You will end up at the high school after a nice rush. The ride back up the Gunflint Trail is not a peak ride so i suggest getting some transportation for an other ride.

I was pretty suprised to find the abandon nature of this route in the summer. I brought along a gang of friends and we played alot of games on the way down the hill. I did crash my bike and got some pins in my cushin!!! I like to bring along some leftnut and retire the grape juice!! Long gone are the mollusks within the hopping pond. I snake run all of the people on skateboards in Long Beach Ca!!!!
