Cross Country Rider Summary: This was the last weekend that the mountain bike trail was open. Through the winter and until the summer the area is a ski resort. You resgister at the Afton Alps ski resort office and have to pay $9. This was a surprise for me, comming from Israel where all the bike trails are free and open all year. The trail is a a single track, well maintained, medium technical and physical level of difficulty with some short steep climbs and descents. Overall it was fun and recommended to visitors in the Twin City area. Oded

Cross Country Rider Summary: Pretty good trail. I rode it twice the other day and enjoyed my time with it. $8 dollars/day to ride it is a bit steep, but I could ride it a couple of times per month. The main challenge with this system is the climbs. Lots and lots of climbing, but enough downhill to give a good flow to the system. Recommended Route: The trail is one direction only. Start clubhouse right down the blue stick trail till the red stick trail begins. The red sticks are better single track and the blue are good single track. Ride everything for a decent challenge. Great training ride and good race course. Other recommended trails in the same area: Decorah, Iowa - still the best
Red Wing - just ride it
Lebannon Hills - it is fast
River bottoms - something different
Lutsen - downhills with chairlifts
Pincushin Mtn. Grand Marais - sweet new single track

Weekend Warrior Summary: Riding the Alps is exactly like riding any other Minnesota ski hill: Not much downhill and not much technical challenge. It's too bad b/c there's something to offer in these 700 ft hills covered in hardwood forests.....I guess this is what you can expect from midwest riding.

, from XC racer from Winona, MN Summary: This is a great race cource for XC racing! It doesn't have any "real" single-track, its more like double-track, but it does have very fast down-hill, long climbs you want to die on and is rarely muddy. Beware! off camber, rooty, and tight switch-backs, They made me crash once during my race but I still won 1rst by three minutes and 18th overall! (2003 Afton Avalnche,Sport, 12-15) This trail gets a 4 for pansy "single-track" and you're supposed to pay for a pass! Don't bother, no one checks. Other recommended trails in the same area: Go to Winona- Holzinger and Cherry Hill.
