Ridden Trail: Once a year

Weekend Warrior Summary: Firstly, the relatively lower ratings of this trail are probably because this isn't a "mountain bike trail", it's a converted railroad bed; when building a railroad bed you want flat, straight and gradual - this is essentially a smooth road of hardpacked small gravel that runs though light woods and farm fields.
This is a trail for families on picnics, seniors getting some exercise, locals taking a stroll, and cyclo-toursts with panniers or trailers.
The trail itself is non-technical, easy pedaling and scenic. There is some gradual up and down but it is primarily flat, the crushed limestone is easy to pedal over but nearly as fast as blacktop. The surroundings are about an equal mix of light woods with shady trees overhanging the trail and open farm fields with views from blocks to miles distant. Many small country roads and rural highways cross the trail - watch for cars they don't stop, and a few lakes and bridges too.
The trail-traffic is significantly greater the closer to the Twin Cities you get, lots of weekend warriors near Golden Valley, little near Watertown and virtually none on either side of Winsted.
Watertown makes a nice day trip destination with convienient cafes and a grocery store with a deli, Winsted, 10 miles further also has a grocery.
The trail deteriorates with each landmark: not as smooth past Watertown, mixed with grass patches past Winsted. To find the trail past Winsted, take the road (which turns to dirt) across from the bar. Other recommended trails in the same area: If you ride a mountin bike because you like the comfort of the upright position and mostly enjoy cruising around the Lake of the Isles area then this trail is for you.
If you are looking for something a little more challenging than the Minnesota River trails look elsewhere.
I have ridden this trail three times over as many years to ride and camp overnight with friends of varying endurance levels and have had a lot of fun.

Weekend Warrior Summary: A flat old railroad trail that is is fun for begineers. The horse trail on the side is more difficult to ride on and it's fun to jump the hill between the horse trail and the old railroad trail, but don't clip a tree like I did. Recommended Route: I started in Plymouth and went to Cosmos. Pretty uneventful, except in Winsted, MN the trail breaks and you have to find it again behind the Millerbernd lightpole factory on the west side of town.

, from Robbinsdale, MN Summary: Three Rivers Parks (formerly Hennepin) paved the trail and manage it from Medicine Lake loop to the DNR trailhead at Vicksburg. This is my favorite Rail/Trail conversion and one of my favorite trails in the metro area. Nothing heavy or challenging, but just a nice ride. More sheltered than Hennepin's LRT trails, and certainly more interesting. It gets out of the 'burbs faster, and into rural country. I have ridden as far as Watertown, and will do the rest this spring. It's a nice ride to take family and new cycling friends on. Recommended Route: Crushed limestone from Vicksburg Rd. (Plymouth)west to Watertown, natural surface west from Watertown to beyond Cosmos. Paved east of Vicksburg to Medicine Lake. Other recommended trails in the same area: Elm Creek Park Trails, Maple Grove

, from Plymouth Summary: The city of Plymouth looks to be extending the trail to the east, almost to Hwy 169 now. (Bassett Creek?) There are some bridges and unfinished trails which take it near West Medicine Lake Park/Beach (the fumes from the timbers are almost overwhelming)
Recommended Route: none, I just found the trail connection last week. Other recommended trails in the same area: Plymouth has an extensive Trail system
