Cross Country Rider Summary: I agree with Captain Crash, I am one of those guys that pioneered riding in Lake Benton. In fact, I am sure I know him. For a 400 acre park it is a hoot. Sure, none of the trails are long or technical but it is like a little playground. Considering how little mountain biking there is in that area, it is worth a summer evening. Also bring a road bike, great roads around that area. Recommended Route: Park at the ski area and follow the trail up the draw to the right that parralels Hwy 14. You can then drop down from the top in a couple different places. From there, just pick a new trail each time up and down the park. Try the trails from both directions, it can be very entertaining.
Ahhh yes, the old Tuesday night rides and liquid carbo loads!

Weekend Warrior Summary: I rode this back in college with some of the guys from the bike shop in Brookings...we did it every Tuesday night in the spring if I remember right....now that I look back on it, it was a great time, but that was because we were in good company. There is a route, I don't know if it is still there, but you could ride in a huge culvert under the road and out to another trail on the North side of the road...that was fun, but it has been almost 10 years since I have been there, and I had just started "seriously" MTBing...that summer I found the Black Hills... Recommended Route: We parked in the ski hill parking lot and rode from there...one of the guys did get 37mph on the short downhill...that's always fun Other recommended trails in the same area: Go to Big Sioux or Newton Hills.

, from Sioux Falls, SD Summary: Not impressed by any of the trails but the scenery is nice in the campground. The trails are mostly wooded but rather steep and short. I like to climb but this was like climb 40 yards ride down 40 yards, over and over and over. Not much in the line of real technical just up and down. Every bottom had a mud hole that provided no excitement to the ride, just a 3 foot span of mud. The trail is used primarily by horses and from the looks of it they were working to get footing most of the time also. Maybe I'm just used to riding a little more in the line of real MTB trails. OVERALL: Not worth the 45 miles I drove but to a local rider I suppose their something other than pavement. 2 stars given because there is a workout factor involved...pushing your bike around the woods has to count for something :) P.S. August is a very humid month to be riding this area also. Many side trails were overgrown badly. Recommended Route: A little clarification here from the previous post...The trailhead is in the Hole in the Mountain campground/ski hill which is located on Hwy 14 at the southwestern corner of the lake just as you are leaving town and heading west to Brookings, SD on Hwy 14. Trails start at the far west end of the campgrowd back by a playground and shelter. One trail is right behind the shelter and another is further back in the trees of the southwestern corner of the playground.
