If you want to do some crazy road biking, check out these city streets. It's like mountain biking on pavement. If you've never been to Duluth, just picture the hills of San Francisco except with more pot-holes. On some of the longer streets, I've done 45mph descents. Climbing back up is a real workout. The streets wind all over the place and are fun to explore, with cool old mansions all over the place to make the city atmosphere more interesting. I'm surprised I don't see more bikers out on the streets, its a really fun change of pace from all the mud and sticks, etc. Of course, there are real dirt trails in Duluth too, but I thought I'd report my experience on the streets just to mix things up a little. Check it out, you won't be disapointed!
Summary: I grew up in Duluth, and put thousands of miles on mountain bikes there. Although there are plenty of good dirt trails around, I always got a good thrill out of speeding down the asphalt/concrete/bricks. Just keep your eyes peeled for your own safety.
Recommended Route: Mesabi Avenue from the top (Central Entrance/6th Av. E.) all the way down. Long, steep, some nice curves, and probably the best condition road in the city. If you're lucky you can hit the couple stoplights on green or when nobody is coming. Try to count how many cars you pass on the way down!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Take the right exit off Mesabi onto 2nd Ave E. It turns and goes straight downhill, steep. You can LAUNCH a good 50 ft when you cross 4th St. But you better be on the brakes hard when you land so you can stop before you get killed crossing 3rd St.
Also, if you want to do some drops and stunts, try the UMD campus. There's some urban architecture there to play on.

Summary: Downtown- Not only can you stick to the streets and have fun, but you can head off on to the sidewalks and alleys and find huge jumps drop-offs. Head towards the lake, make sure you hit the small Park on 4th street between Lake and 1st. There's a very cool hit by the bridge. Woodland/Hunters Park? head towards Dowtown and there's endless big drops and jumps on the side of the streets. Make sure you hit the Bluff area behind Fryberger arena before you continue into Woodland.
Recommended Route: Hey fatso, ever heard of urban assualt? Need to hit the Duluth downtown area OR the Woodland area. For the downtown rides you can start up on 9th street & 2nd or 3rd avenue east. For Woodland you can start in the Hunters Park/Woodland area near the Water Tower on top of Minneapolis avenue.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hartley, Chester Bowl, Tischer Creek trail, Spirit mountain, and Jay Cooke/Munger trail.

Summary: Duluth streets make the whole place look terribly run-down, but it should be noted that the city sits on Laurentian red clay, which oozes and crawls with a life of its own (especially in freeze/thaw cycles), and no one has ever invented any economical roadbed construction techniques that can cope with it. You either spend millions-per-mile on the concrete interstate's deep gravel fill, or you put up with potholes. That's just the way it is.
But of course the place IS a bit run-down in its own right, too. I suppose the shabby-lookin streets keep investors away. A great place to escape pretentious corporates.
Try the Fond du Lac area way out on the town's west end, and up the St. Louis River gorge there.
