Searchmont

Average Rating:    (2.67 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 6

The trails at and around Searchmont provide about as close to true mountain biking as there is in the midwest U.S or northern Ontario. The base at Searchmont is a winter ski resort, adjacent to a tiny burg, which has opened their XC trails for summer biking. Day passes run $8 Canadian (about $4 US), but if you stay at a Searchmont chalet its free. You can choose any of four major systems to travel, for a total of some 60 miles, and they range from extremely tight singletrack to fireroads to ungroomed back country trails. The Achigan (20 mile loop) and Goulais River (14 mile loop) systems are best Achigan for high and heavy mountain terrain, and the Goulais for beautiful scenery which includes a 40 waterfall.

Trail Directions
Searchmont is located about 20 miles (45 km) north of Sault Ste Marie MI/ON. Take I-75 north across the border, then Hwy 17 north from the Sault to Hwy 556, which takes you right into the burg. The resort is on your right just before town. I put this trail system on the Michigan page so that MMBA members and those of us back in civilization know and can find the place. It is also found in Dennis Hansens book (area 117).

Summary:
Spanky ain't truthin'. I grew up in SSM, started mountain biking in 1981, and discovered so many trails there. Sure you can ride at Searchmont. I raced there once and it was all right, kinda up the ski hill, then back down, but through the woods on some tight and twisties. You may also be able to ride at Stokely Creek Lodge, just check first. We held a race there in 1982! The trails are good, not very technical, but you are way out in the woods, and sometimes that's enough. Anyway, on to the other trails. Kinsmen/Hiawatha Park is a nordic/downhill ski area and has some great trails (40 km/25 miles). A lot of easier doubletrack dirt, but if you look hard, especially on the Red Pine and Hiawatha trails, there are several km of great singletrack. In behind Hiawatha, there is even more great singletrack on the Voyager Trail. This is a hiking trail, but nobody hikes it. You can travel east or west on this trail for hours. Sure you might have to hike-a-bike a ways, but it is lots of fun and remote. The Voyager Trail actually goes west all the way out to Gros Cap (near Pointe Des Chenes Beach) and it is rideable all the way. I have done the entire Voyager Trail in the SSM area by bike and while it is not always rideable, it has lots to offer. Hills, cliffs, river crossing, rapids, waterfalls, wildlife (moose, bear, deer...), loamy dirt, hardpack, rocks, roots, dropoffs, valleys, views... Take a friend, this trail is very remote, and you do not want to get hurt or lost up there. If anybody needs more info, post here and I will answer you when I can.

Recommended Route:
There are so many great trails near SSM...

Having lived in Sault Ste. Marie for five years I must tell you that I never owned a mountain bike while up there and for good reason, there are no trails. Searchmont is a alright place to ski but for gods sake do not go mountain biking there it sucks. Besides Searchmonts' investors are bailing on the place and it is falling out of repair.

Recommended Route:
None

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Stay in the LP.

Summary:
Went for a long weekend with the other sprocket heads I ride with and stayed at the Searchmont Ski Hill Condos. Had to look around to find someone to give money to and get a key from. Condo was OK, priced well, nice pool & hot tub, nobody else there.... hhhhmmmm makes ya think.... Anyway, we found about 6 mi of "good" single track and I use the term loosely. The recommended "trail" was more like a deer run! Very poorly maintained (not at all...) and totally unmarked. We felt more like we were bush whackin' than bikin'. You can ride on the trails on the ski hill but they were pretty weak as well. The best part was swimming in the river near a little "waterfall". Scenery here was spectacular (yep, that one spot), but the rest was like hanging in a poor logging town. We ended up riding dirt roads to get some miles in. Poor substitue when you hopes are high based on their advertisement. Been there, done that, will NEVER go back! Would give it one star out of ten but on a scale of 5 I'm rounding down to Zero if possible(couldn't). Oh well, I guess to have an opinion you have to at least rate it a 1.

Recommended Route:
A different one....

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Sorry. Couldn't find one....

Summary:
Searchmont has SOME good single track. If you want to drive all the way to Canada for about 4 miles of single track that is so overgrown there are spots you have to stand up to see over the ferns, then go to Searchmont. It sucks compared to Poto, Yankee, North County....and almost every trail I've ridden in the L.P. is better. But it does have a lot of incredible scenery. So if you go bring a camera but leave your sense of adventure at home. I give this trail 3 stars only because of the scenery.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
None. Hathawama or whatever it's called is the worst trail EVER.
