Fire road (touring) Rails to Trails Conservatory trail. This trail is a very rough ride in some sections due to lots of rocks. It drops about 180 feet from Orion Township to Dryden, but is very gradual due to the railway that was once there. There is a section in Oxford that is broken due to new construction. You'll have to work your way around it. This would be a casual ride, but due to the very rough surface it can be tough. Bring your thighs and be prepared for a workout.

Summary:
Ive ridden this trail several times in the past few years, the area between Imlay City and Boardman Road ( Oakland County Line ) has quite a few rough spots but can be easily ridden with a mountain bike, from Boardman Road south has had lots of upgrading and is great riding for ones that have hybird bikes, all in all I find this trail to be a great ride with very little others on the trail at most times, the only paved areas Ive seen thus far is in the village of Leonard ( one mile ) and the town of Oxford, I would guess of a couple miles, the rest is hard packed and well maintained in Oakland County.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Paint Creek, Clinton River, Macomb Orchard, Bloomer Park, There are also several parks in the area with bike paths.

Summary:
I rode this trail today with a couple of riding buddies. We rode from the Orion Civic Center park to the 10 mile marker north of Oxford (28 miles round trip). As mentioned in the previous review the trail from the park to Joslyn Rd. is really rough, not a very fun section. The trail is closed between Joslyn and Indianwood (hopefully Mr. Aldrige will eventually open this section). From Indianwood through Oxford it's a good rails to trails ride. Once you get north of Oxford the trail can get very rough again, lots of golf ball sized rocks. There are some very scenic ares north of Oxford taking you through a canopy of trees with lots of horse farms. As the previous reviewer mentioned, you've got to work hard. There is no coasting on this trail so it's a good thigh workout. It's not my kind of trail, I like more technical trails so I doubt that I'll be back any time soon.

Recommended Route:
Skip the trail south of Indianwood

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bald Mountain, Pontiac Lake, Holdridge Lakes, orion Oaks

Summary:
I rode this trail from start to finish and back again (36) miles with the new trails south Joslyn Rd.. I which I did not have to do the (back again). This is an old railway and it feels like it for most of the northern sections with many bumps and huge babyhead rocks. The skill level is 1 but the work level is 5. It is just not enjoyable when you are always working to get momentum through the rock piles. The southern part of the trail is broken up by a golf course but there are paved bike paths to get you around. To be fair there are some sections just south of Oxford where the trail is scenic and an easy ride. This trail has potential to be a nice family ride and there does seem to be some money and work being put into its development. I recommend this trail only if you are looking for a hard workout.

Recommended Route:
Ride between Lake Orion and Oxford.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bald Mountain North, Holly, Pontiac Lake, Orion Oaks when it is raining.
