Your Mom
5 reviews
4.4 of 5
Has everything. Log rides, ladder bridges, drops, singletrack, up-hills, rock gardens, and finishes with old logging roads that get you lost.
Out of Marquette toward the ski hill. Right, onto the Benson Grade road, park your car. All the way to the top of the Benson Grade, seperates the weak from the strong. At the top, follow the logging road to the right, avoid puddles, find small trail leading off the the right.
Summary: Lots of construction and maintenance performed on this trail, it seems, since the last review. The trail is well marked *at the trail head* but isn't hard to follow. It intersects the Pioneer Loop after a nasty 5' rock drop. Previous reviews may have been correct at the time, but to update: This trail is sick! Beautifully maintained by what must be an army of locals. after a mile or so of riding along some technical singletrack on the ridge it opens up to wider singletrack and gets intense quickly. It has Whistler bike park-like features: a winding ladder "bridge" spanning 200 feet or so that is about 4' high transitions into a skinny (5' high) to teeter, to 8' drop onto perfect dirt landing. This immediately leads into a wooden built banked turn, to a gap jump to platform 8' high, to 12' drop. . . . . its amazing! Most of these stunts have been built this year, so they are all in great working order. Frequent 10' + gap jumps everywhere. Scout all these jumps on your first run, there are gaps in between stunts / unexpected features that are potentially dangerous. The only thing I might prefer is some table tops rather than gap after gap, to take some of the anxiety out of the equation, but if you got the talent and the balls to hang- this is the trail. Its easy to think you are on the Northshore here. Your Mom is one of the finest extreme trails around. It ends on a fire road that leads downhill back to the parking area / Benson grade. Its a nice 1/4 mile spin from here with a couple wall rides to relax on. . . assuming you made it down in one piece. * There are sissy routes for all the stunts and jumps* which is a good thing- the penalty for failure on a few of these stunts is pretty high. Truely, the kind of trail that makes you think about quiting your job and moving!
Recommended Route: Hike up Benson Grade- Bomb Down. Trail Head is marked on your right with a black diamond. . . . . . its a double black.

Summary: Your Mom was thrilling, but also pretty hard on me at times. She has changed with age because of a golf course, but you can still ride her. Just keep going down and you'll have some thrilling moments.
Recommended Route: Top of Benson Grade area trail. Connect with some locals or stop in a bike shop. The guys at Quick Stop are great.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Split Tree Upper, The Flow, Bareback, Jedi. Many trails in the area are not well marked or marked at all. South Trails and Harlow Lake trails are marked better than Benson Grade trails.

Summary: This trail may be fun on a light hardtail, but it's a death march on a heavy freeride bike. Seriously, I think I pushed my bike uphill more than I rode it down. Not what you'd call a "flowy" trail. Ends at a fresh clear-cut, so you get to ride through a bunch of sand, woodchips and heavy equiptment ruts before you hit the trail leading back to the highway. Turn around after the 6-or-so foot high logride if you know what's good for you..
Recommended Route: Go up to the top of Benson Grade, then go down one of the many other (IMO better) trails. Avoid the last 2/3 of the trail if you are riding a heavy dual-suspension freeride bike.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Huckstables, Your Sister, The Flow (see Art Sharp on this site)....

Summary: Pack, drive, unpack, ride, repack, drive. Hucks, drops, ladders, mud, view, experts only. O.K. So I'm 11,but I only missed the 15ft drop and the 12 inch wide,12ft high ladder.I also rode in 30 degree weather during November with snow on the ground.it's got some great freeride terrian and tech trails. A lot of rocks and drops, cool ladders, and AWESOME views. the last halfmile or so is on a logging road and a little hard not to get lost.at the very end there is a cool ledge to drop off but get on your brakes or you'll end as road kill on a 4 lane highway.
see ya there!
Peace
Recommended Route: up,down-back up down again
Other recommended trails in the same area: anything that looks like singletrack and hope it's a trail. hit yo sista at the same start point.

Summary: OK folks, Marquette was named one of the 5 best biking towns in the US and Your Mom is a major reason why. Refer to Bikemag.com, and search for "Your Mom." The whole trail is superb singletrack and starts out with some rough little rock drops. Then comes the equalizing rock face that most will walk down. From there explore the many log rides, ladder bridges and other challenges. A few nice views once you climb to the top of the ladder bridge. The ending can be fun trying to find your way back to M 553, good luck! All kinds of other fun trails and obstacles lead off from Your Mom so explore.
Recommended Route: Start from the top of the Benson Grade and vear off to the right. Trailhead is off to the right and then continues down the hill.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Art Sharp (AKA The Flow), Your Sister
