Ridden Trail: Every few months

Cross Country Rider Summary: The Yankee springs trail has a good mixture of flats, hills, steep climbs, downhills and high speed turns. There is a fair amount of sand on the trail, but nothing to worry about. There are some nice drop offs and a few tight technical sections. The "pines" are is very awesome. The pines only have branches on the very top so it feels like you are in a huge room and it smells great! A few places had some nice deep ravines on either side. The trail is well marked and fairly hard to lose track of. Recommended Route: The staging area is not actually labeled Yankee Springs, it is labeled "Deep Lake Unit". This threw me off, but I found it. The first part of the loop is short and fairly flat, it comes back out to the staging area, but keep going straight to find the rest of the trail. The beginning part is useful for warmup. Other recommended trails in the same area: Fort Custer

Cross Country Rider Summary: This was my first time riding here and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't encounter another rider at any point along the way. Also, because of recent rains, the sand that everyone complains about about was basically a none issue. Overall, the trail was great for an intermediate level rider. Newbies wouldn't like it. You can go as hard as you want because the hills never really get long enough or step enough to sap all your energy (i.e., like Highland). Signage was not especially good, especially at the start. It took me a while to realize the trail loops passed the trailhead (directly) about 2 miles in. It's fine once in the trees. There are some excellent downhills (mild drops) and a few pretty technical climbs (relatively speaking). I'll definitely be returning - but only after I try Fort Custer. Recommended Route: It is confusing the first couple miles but there is really only one main route. Grab a map at the camp checkin - it comes in handy. Other recommended trails in the same area: TBD - in Southeastern Michigan try Brighton, Island Lake (easy but fun), Potawotami, and Pontiac Lake.

Racer Summary: This trail is ok for beginers. It's not far away so I try to get there once a month. Recommended Route: Take off right from the parking lot and skip the short loop that starts up the road. Other recommended trails in the same area: Bass River

Cross Country Rider Summary: Great trail for high speeds. A banked corner at the top of a big hill reminded me of a rollercoaster. Possibly my favorite trail in Michigan. Recommended Route: Don't take the cutoffs! The trail is best when ridden all the way. "The Pines" is my favorite so far, but I haven't gone into the "devils soup bowl" yet. Other recommended trails in the same area: I haven't hit Fort Custer yet, but I heard it's just as good or better than Yankee Springs.

Cross Country Rider Summary: This trail is one of my favorites on the west side of Michigan. My wife and I argue constantly about which is better...Yankee or Custer! Yankee is a good workout trail. Over the past five seasons this trail has seen a lot more use. Due to this, July/August are the worst times to ride due to all the loose sand. Let's face it all of the Western Michigan trails are resting 4 inches above the beach. Regardless I have never been disappointed after riding there. We typically ride two 11 mile loops (minus the warm up) each time we go, Light permitting! There isn't anything overly technical with this trail for the intermediate rider, there are just a lot of fun sections with "the pines" and "the luge" (the large downhill .3 mile after the pines) being two of them. Another fun thing is riding through quickly and guessing where the next tree is that is crossing the trail from the summer storms. If you ride there often, you know what I mean. But the Park/MMBA maintenance crew does a very good job with re-routing the trail or dispensing of the downed trees. This is a great trail! Recommended Route: don't miss the far corners of the entire loop! Other recommended trails in the same area: Custer
Egypt Valley
Owasippee
