Summary:
Due to the beauty of this area, I visited this trail last weekend with high expectations. What a disappointment. It's really just a hiking trail through the woods. Good place to take your spouse on his/her first ride and take a picnic lunch. Sandy and pretty wet in places. Weeds encroach in several areas. Definitely not worth the hassle to get there, especially this year with the Pigeon River bridge construction.

Sorry if I sound excessively cranky. Yes, it's scenic in spots, but that hardly distinguishes it from just about any other MTB trail in Michigan, even the ones in the Detroit metro area.

Trail marking and signage is adequate but can leave you guessing in a few spots. Could be better.

Recommended Route:
Take Sturgeon Valley Road east out of Vanderbilt about 10 miles (a guess) to Twin Lakes Rd. north. After a short distance, you'll see the headquarters cabin on the left along with Shingle Mill Pathway parking. Attendants in cabin can provide a map and are very helpful. Careful which way you start out on trail; from the parking area, follow the trail back toward the cabin and camping area.

NOTE: For 2009, Sturgeon Valley Road is closed at the Pigeon River bridge, forcing a lengthy detour. Ask a local for directions, or follow the detour signs.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Try Aspen Park in Gaylord first (surprisingly good for a city park system), then Hanson Hills before this one. Boyne Mountain is good if you like climbing.

Once a year

Summary:
It is a fun trail with plenty of hills and picker bushes. But it is still worth the ride. For the part after the bridge it is a boardwalk. You may want to walk that. My friend and I did it, and when he fell off I could bearly see him. 11 miles of singletrack a grat trail

Recommended Route:
Start from the pigeon river campground. Head south to the bridge up through the swamp and up to the over look and back down.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Buttles Road Pathway. 3 Miles north of Lewiston on Buttles Road. 6 miles long.

Summary:
Although we wouldn't consider this a "technical" trail, it is alot of FUN to ride. The scenery is worth the trip alone. The best part of the ride was coming upon Section 4 Lake. Expecting it to be a small mudhole, it was a surprise to find a lake with blue/green pristine water. Our only regret was not jumping in! Altough there were many small inclines, there was only one big hill approaching the "Overlook". Another unique feature was the almost two mile board walk traversing thru the swamp. A little hard to manuvere a times but definitely fun. And, yes, one of us did fall off but we are not saying who! What we can't decide is what was the most perfect ending; the Corona we treated ourselves to at the trails end, or realizing that we only only live 60 minutes from one of the best mountain bike trails in N. Lower Michigan!

Recommended Route:
Take 1-75 N. to Vanderbilt, head east follow signs to Pigeon River Area.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Glacier Gorge -Gaylord -(Otsego County Country Club)- very technical. VASA Single Track loop - Traverse City - very twisty and very fun!
