Mandan Trail
1 reviews
 3 of 5

The Mandan winds around the major hills in the eastern portion, but there are some long climbs. The western portion is generally flat while following the Montreal River. There is an occasional rock in the roadbed, but it is generally a hard packed dirt trail. The Mandan is a major route to get to many of the other trails in the Keweenaw. The western trail head begins at the ghost town of Mandan on US41 about 2 miles west of Lake Medora. The trail goes south from US41 for 1 mile, crosses the Montreal River, then forks left to follow the river east for 10 miles. The trail crosses the Montreal River again, heads southeast for 3 miles, turns northeast for 3 miles, then cuts back northwest for 5 miles where it meets the eastern trail head.

Summary:
This is a wide trail due to its moderate use by logging trucks. The western portion is flat and easy. The eastern portion has some long climbs but nothing technical.

Recommended Route:
Either trail head is a fine place to begin. The Mandan is really a pipeline to other more challenging trails in the Keweenaw.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
High Rock Trail, Keystone Bay Trail, Smith's Fishery Trail, Horseshoe Harbor Trail
