crystal mtn. trail

Underdeveloped trails around golf course area and ski areas that are very sandy. Needs work, has enormous potential if developed right. Many downed trees and broken limbs scattered on trail system. Do it if in the area, dont make a special trip to check it out.

Ridden Trail:
Every few months

Summary:
About 4 miles of really easy single track and two track and 1 mile of heart pounding uphills and downhills. A bit of sand but not enough to be a problem. Trail is in decent shape - clear and not overgrown. The last mile or so along M115 makes a stop here well worth it if you are in the area. A 1/2 mile long connector to the Betsie River Pathway adds about 7 miles to the ride, which turns the whole outing into a nice 12 mile or so ride. If you are a novice DO NOT ride the Screaming Eagle trail. Get off on the paved road instead.

Recommended Route:
Start at the resort at the base of the ski hills. Bike down the main road through the resort and take the middle fork at the stop sign. Ride the paved road up the hill and around the corner to the left and there is a sign for the MTB trail on the right. Follow the red arrows and occasional blue "Aspen" signs. Pineapple and Crushed Pineapple to the left are slightly more difficult trails that will add a mile or so onto the ride. These are loops that spit you right back out onto Aspen. Watch for the connector to the Betsie River Pathway on the left after about 2 miles. You will also re-join the Aspen trail here when you are done with the Betsie. If you don't want to climb 2 good sized hills, turn right and use the bike lane on the paved road when you come to it and follow it up and down a few hills back to the resort.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Big M, Betsie River Pathway, Cadillac Pathway, Lake Ann Pathway.

Summary:
dissapointed by amount of sand on trail, difficult to climb due to loose terrain. Much of trail is overgrown, loose stick, high weed. Well marked, but don't make a special trip to ride.

If you go, make sure to take on the "pot roast" sandwich at the golf clubhouse grill........um, um, good stuff......

Ridden Trail:
Ridden Once

Reviewed by: Gary , from Grand Rapids Michigan

Summary:
Trail has potential but you can tell resort is golf oriented and not bike oriented by trail design. Great views of golf course through much of it but who wants to see old men in plaid hitting a little white ball around when riding. Back side of mountain is best place to ride, but singletrack to them is six foot wide and all hills are straight up or straigh down. Great for gravity but climbing is a bear. Could use some switchbacks to make the ride a little friendlier in spots. Can easily hit 30mph+ on downhills with little to fear. Construction has dampened the Aspen portion of the trail system and made it a little harder to follow. Actually have to ride on golfcart paths in a couple of areas.

Recommended Route:
Start low finish high
