Weekend Warrior Summary: Sunday, I took the "tracks" from Zukey Lake to Stockbridge, then by road to Portage Lake for my first "real" ride of the year!
Heading West into Pinckney the surface improves from waves of hardpacked black gravel to the smooth light gravel found on the Lakeland Trail. The scenery really opens up when you cross Cedar Lake Rd. with open fields and plenty of swamp vistas, it was great with the wind in my face. All is smooth except for the the unavoidable dimpled scoops left by horses on the 4 mile stretch West of Cedar Lake Rd. West of Gregory the surrounding land rises above the trail in places providing plenty of shady spots to stop and catch your breath under the trees. After covering about 17.5 miles in 1.75 hours, I was glad to stop at the store in Stockbridge and get a cold water. I then continued another 20 miles along various back roads and arrived at Portage lake in a somewhat sore condition.
Overall the Lakelands Trail is great for beginners or anyone that wants to hold a pace with no steep grades and no turns. Recommended Route: The best part of the trail is between Gregory and Stockbridge. I use the ungraded section to the East of Lakelands Trail for easy access to the roads and trails West of Pinckney.

Weekend Warrior Summary: The trail is in horrible condition due to the horse riders using the trail!
This trail is advertised for bike riding, there is no way!!!
The trail is totally covered in holes caused by the horse hooves. Sand and crushed stone was dumped over the trail. This only made it worse for anybody else using the trail except horses.
The DNR should ban horses from using this trail. This trail is in such a beautiful area of Michigan but yet nobody else other than horse riders can enjoy it.
Seperate trails are needed if they expect others to use the trail.
When i tried riding the trail with my mountain bike i gave up after only a mile and a half and had to turn back.
All the other posted ratings that i have read about this trail reflect the same feelings.
Is this a multi-use trail or just a horse trail? Is the Michigan public supposed to be able to use it too?
The trail has been ruined by a few to only stop its use for the many.
Theres plenty of open fields and wooded areas that property owners could open up for the horses.
Fix the trail Michigan DNR!, Let everyone enjoy it, not just horses riders!

, from Jackson, Michigan Summary: We hiked this trail, and met a few bikers on they way, most didn't get too far before turning around. Although sources say "paved" this trail is not at all. It is covered with fine sand/gravel and is very dusty, tough to walk through and worse to bike through. If you want a challenge this will keep your legs working hard. Overall this was a very nice hiking trail and had many small bridges over streams. I would definetly hike it again once it was paved. Recommended Route: We started in Pinckney and ended up in Stockbridge ~ we also went through Gregory where we stopped at Mugg & Bopps and got some Gatorade.
