Hungerford Lake Trail
10 reviews
 2.9 of 5

Mix of nice tight single track and some 2 track/xc ski trai. At least 12 miles of designated bike trails. Until a few years ago you had to ride the shared horse and wider xc ski trails that are heavily used by horses. There has been added designated bike single track that is off limits to horses. The trails are much improved and not used much. Try to get a map through the Manistee National Forest office in Cadillac or Manistee because it gets a little confusing with all the 2 tracks, dirt roads, horse and ski trails. Just follow the "bike" markers. The MTB trail is basically a 9 mile circle loop, with a 2 or 3 mile connector across the middle of the circle going east/west.

Summary:
If you take a 250 pound cow and put that on top of a horse and ride it on a designated mountain bike trail the mountain bike trail will lose. This could be a nice trail but the horses and the cows that ride the horses have ruined it. Most of the trail is choppy from the horses and there are some real sandy spots from the horses tearing it up. It is marked no horses but stupid horse people can't read. I do not recommend using this trail until they stop the horses from using it. I would rate this trail a 4 if it wasn't beat up from the horses but since it is it gets a 2. This trail is a waste of time. Better off going to the North Country Trail if you are up that way.

Summary:
At first I was not impressed, but as we all know not all first impressions are correct. The first three miles were a bit choppy due to the storms in the area knocking over trees and those horses beating up the once wet ground. Although some of the trails are designated "bikers only" and we know that horses can't read and some of their riders are just plain stupid, there are areas that are just plain torn up. Let's not forget the piles of stench laid behind. Anyway as you get further out from the campgrounds, trailhead and boatlaunch/swimming area the trail tend to become much nicer and much more fun. I stayed on the outside of the large loop going clockwise. As you get out toward the top of the map be ready for a fairly good upper body workout as you go over bump after bump similar to that quick set in "the Pines" at Yankee. Keep in mind that Hungerford literally has hundreds of them. Sometimes you are going downhill and riding them, sometimes uphill. I assume they were made by some forestry tool many years ago. Very Cool and nothing like I have ridden anywhere else, although I haven't ridden on the East Side much other than a couple of races. The rest of the ride was decent with a couple of log piles and a couple of surprising ramps up and over some fallen logs. One of which is 3 to 4 feet off the ground. The second one was in need of some maintenance as it was missing a couple of pieces on the ladder on the back side. The entire trail is in need of some work as some of the markers were missing and others were blocked by vegetation. All in all this trail is pretty good once you get out away from the horse destruction, with lots of potential. It is a good ride for those of you going through mid-Michigan on your way back or to the North part of the state.

Recommended Route:
Go from swimming area or trail head, clockwice along outside of large loop. $3.00 parking required

Other recommended trails in the same area:
owassippee (muskegon/Montague)
Big M (Manistee)
Egypt Valley (CSGA) (Grand Rapids)

Summary:
great tight "back woods" trails. there were a couple of downed trees four foot high in the middle of the trail that made you stop and walk around. it was a great ride didn't see anybody else on the trails. everybody could ride this trail. no hard stuff. very few thight spots. great time. i found 12 miles.

Recommended Route:
follow the bike signs counter clock.
