October Mountain

I write this as more or less a warning not to go here for mountain biking. The land managers have ceded control of the trails to ATV people who have ruined the place for all other potential users. We rode 27 miles and barely found 4 miles of single track. Stay away. Mud bogs, baby-head strewn hills, washed out, rutted and all double wide. A real slog. Stay away. Thanks to the ATV people! Oh - and the camp ground, despite being the largest state forest - is right next to a road and a power station. So sleep tight when the ATV and motorbike crowd roar by at 7am while you are trying to recover from an actual work out. Did I mention to stay away?

Summary:
October Mountain's singletrack is extensive and awesome. Hours and hours of riding. You just need to hook up with some locals who can show it to you. Start with LBS's. If you don't know where the singletrack is, though, you'll think the place is lousy.

Pittsfield State Forest, Yokun Ridge

Summary:
I concur with the previous review. This place has been over run by ATVS and is a mess. The state of MA should be ashamed of the trail conditions - they are rutted and full of ponds. Where is is not a quagmire it is endlessss babyheads.

Recommended Route:
Because of the previsous review I decided to try the eastern end of the park. I rode from county road and rode finerty pond trail, schoolhouse and gorilla. Gorilla was the only one remotely rideable. I ended up riding the dirt roads so I could get something of a workout. If there is single track here I never saw it.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Anything. Stay away from October Mt. State Forest unless you are just looking for dirt road rides.

Summary:
I started at Felton Pond, rode up Shermerhorn Rd, right on Lenox-Whitney Place Rd, right on West Branch Rd, left on Navin Trail, right on Tannery Trail and right on Boulder Trail to return to the start. I wouldn't recommend the ride. It's 2/3s dirt roads and 1/3 wet, rutted, muddy, trashed atv trails. I know that's what the description of October Mtn is anyway, but I just thought I'd reinforce it. Go somewhere else until the atv's have been gone for at least 10 years!

Recommended Route:
none
