Lynn Woods

There are great trails and fire roads to both the right and left of Walden Pond. Great technical trails to right. Mixed bag on left with both fire roads and single track. Lots to explore.

Summary:
This was an AMAZING network of trails. I dare compare this to Moab. I will refer to these trails as the Moab of the East. I was so shocked and impressed with these trails, which were all up, around, over, under, through huge rocks! There were huge drops, gaps, wall rides, you name it!!! Awesome views of the Boston skyline too. My buddy Rob and I rode there and met some real cool locals and we all ripped it up. Too bad our Philadelphia Eagles just barely lost to the Patriots that night or it would have been a 100% complete weekend.

Recommended Route:
No idea. We just rode until we found some riders with sweet bikes and followed them...

Summary:
Lynn Woods offers some of Massachusetts’ best technical riding. You have rock drops ranging from 3 feet to 20 feet, a few quick but excellent downhill sections and trail loop networks that give the ride an endless array of fun stuff.

Lynn Woods has two different riding styles dependent upon which side of the reservation you ride. If you enter the ball field parking lot (Great Woods Road Entrance) off of route 129, the left side (south side) has more XC type riding. The right side (north side) has more freeride style with major rock drops. You will know which side is right and left because a body of water called “Walden Pond” ends close to the parking lot giving you the choice of direction.

Major problem, the current trail map provided by the park, it only has 1/3 of the trail network related to the north side (technical side). This is because some trails are not shall we say “legal” and others that are legal are just not on the map. So if you go and don’t know you way around, hook up with someone or a group. People are wicked friendly.

Recommended Route:
I am not a big XC fan, so I will leave the south side of the reservation to someone else that can give better trail suggestion. As for the north side, the only thing I can tell you about the trails legally is the following: Take the fire road (Ox Pasture Road) until you get to “Overlook Trail”. Turn left and go about 0.5 mile in and you will begin to the fun stuff. Overlook Trail takes you to “Great Frog Boulder” and “Balanced Boulder” that has great technical stuff that will make your hair stand up. Other then that, there is Bow Ridge that is to the left side of Ox Pasture Road. You will have lots of fun, but the trail is cut short because of a housing development. Do not except to find any built stunts or structures. This is city/state land and thus ILLEGAL for them to exist. However there is plenty of natural stuff that can be very dangerous. So, if you go to Lynn Woods, make sure to ride within you ability. The only way to get most people out if they hurt themselves is to carry them out. That takes hours.

"Don't bring the wife here!"

Huh??? Unless SHE kicks YOUR ass. It could happen, dude.

But I do agree it's not for beginners. It's one of my favorite places to ride, because I like technical stuff. But don't expect an aerobic workout unless you stay south of Walden Pond. Don't go when it's at all wet.

The one things that bums me out is that all the really hard trails that I used to ride 10-15 years ago on Bow Ridge are now totall blown out by people trying to get around rocky areas. The trails are still hard, but in a different way - lots of optional big drops. But no tight twisty stuff.

Why do people not know how to "ride it or walk it"?

Recommended Route:
North of the pond for more techincal stuff. South for a little easier and an aerobic workout. YOu can do a tour around the whole reservoir if you want, but it requires a short section along Rte 1.

Summary:
Great place, but a lil rocky at some points. North of Walden pond for serious freeriders, south of it for the xc and comfort riders, if you are a beginniner stick to the fire roads, the single track on both sides is nuts. AWESOME.

Recommended Route:
Take the fire road up to the steel tower from the eastern entrance, then take the single track from the steel tower down to the stone tower. it's a nasty downhill singletrack, rocky at beginning, with a sick rock formed jump midway thru, goes thru one small stream, best to hop over, but you can ride thru without trouble. another nice singletrack is the first trail on your left from the eastern entrance, it passes the Gannon Municipal Golf Course, and rides along the shore of Breed's pond. The trail starts with a bunch of stairs, be careful on these. Pretty steep trail, gets you scared at some parts.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ravenswood, Beveryly

Summary:
I ride this park every chance I get on my lunch break. I've been riding this trail for 2 years. I think I have finally ridden 95% of the trail. There are so many trails here. All sorts of different riding as well. If you go East of the lake you can do XC stuff on the fire roads. If you go West of the lake you can do trail riding and free riding. I love this park and it saddens me that the Bow Ridge trail has been gobbled up by cookie cutter development. There are still plenty of sick trails to visit but that trail was legendary. Beginners can ride these trails as long as they stick to the fireroads. All the other trails are very rocky and technical. It can be ridden with a HT but be prepared for a jackhammer type ride. I rode a steel HT here for 2 weeks and I think I need a spinal fusion after that. Big plush suspension works very well here. To really enjoy these trails you have to get to know them. There are a lot of boring fire roads and completely washed out eroded trails. Once you learn how to avoid those trails and get on the good ones you'll be happy.

Recommended Route:
Rt. 1 to the Naked Fish lot. Go along RT. 1 and take the first left. Follow the trail to the right and take a right off of the big rock. Follow this trail into the woods and go from there.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Gordon College, Brass Balls, B&T's, Dogtown.
