Trout Brook Reservation
2 reviews
4 of 5
Trout Brook is all singletrack, with about 8 miles of looping trails inside park. Numerous options around park as well. Quinapoxet watershed trails border Trout Brook on both sides. For easy riding on mostly fireroads and doubletrack, explore Quinapoxet. The West Boylston Rail Trail can also be reached via the Quinapoxet trails across the street from Trout Brook. On the same side of Manning Street, the QP trails continue up a steep hill, down a powerline and across Rt 31, all the way to the Quinapoxet Resevoir. This route is quite long and mostly flat, a round trip from the rail trail to the reservoir is about 24 miles, with a loop through Trout Brook.
For a shorter, more interesting ride, stay in Trout Brook. Check out the map before entering. There are 4 or 5 labeled trails that loop together and form a nice 8-10 mile ride. There is the Red, Blue, and white trails, as well as the X-Mas tree trail and the White Dot Trail, market by (?) Yellow Dots. Another trailhead is on the other side of the reservation, on Mason Street with another trail map to consult. Good XC riding on two-way trails, but some are better in one direction for downhill pleasure. The Blue trail is very rocky and long. The Red and White trails are short and sweet, and the X-Mas tree trail is a good connector with a few other options for singletrack routes.
Summary: I feel the need to update my original review. First, the White Oak trail, which I caled the white dot before, is perhaps the best trail at Trout Brook. Also, for a quick warm-up, the yellow trail that begins next to the campground is short and steep at both ends and is a nice DH diversion. It will deposit you right back on the trails that lead in from the campgound and you can continue on with the rest of your ride. I also reccommend that the White Oak trail (yellow dots)should be taken from the right side of North St., across the road from the "White Oak" boulder. This route is quite rocky and technical, and probably gives you max downhill potential, although it isn't very much. The Holden DPW does a nice job maintaining Trout Brook, and the area is getting better as the Holden MDC bike path is in development.
Recommended Route: Also check out trails off Mill St., quick ride from TB. Take the fire road off right side of Manning St., next to TB and climb to powerline. A quick downhill will bring you to Mill St. TH is at end of road by waterfall. Here is a flat rail bed, a couple fire roads and a nice singletrack next to the river. It rides above a steep gorge and ends back down near the waterfall. A pretty good extension for Trout Brook. p.s. don't be fooled by the many fisherman's trails that dead end brookside.

Summary: Trout Brook has good XC-style singletrack. Clean 2-way trails make for fairly easy riding, but it is good for a short ride. The Quinapoxet Reservation and Rail trail is very easy; good for kids and beginners.
