Nashua River Trail
3 reviews
 4.67 of 5

This is an old railroad bed that has been paved over. Not exactly an MTB trail, however this paved "trail" cuts through the middle of several nice places to ride offroad. From the Ayer side you first hit some power lines that have some sandy trails on either side. Closer to Pepperell there is J Harry Rich State forest which has a ton of nice trails, some along the Nashua river. From the center of Ayer to Peperrel it is exaclty 8 miles. The trail continues all the way to new hampshire. Past Peperrel center is still a work in progress (there are some side trails there too). This is a great trail for beginers, if you are more advanced try exploring the side trails there are some fun places to ride. If your into night rides this is a really fun trail. Oh ya when you ride through the Groton section be sure and look for the beaver. Also watch for turtles they seem to like sleeping on the pavement esp after a rain storm.

Trail Directions
Two nice places to pick up this trail are in Ayer center where there is a parking lot, bike racks, and bathrooms. Or in Pepperell center accross from the White Hen store. Either place has places to eat and stores to pick up water etc. In Peperrel center there is a bike shop under the White hen (right off the trail...nice), in Ayer there is one going in just down the street from the parking lot.

Summary:
Excellent ride, though as mentioned not really mountain biking unless you take a side excursion. VERY FLAT. However pick this if you want to lay some miles down without worrying about traffic. I missed the beavers, but did have a nice encounter with a Doe in Ayer just north of the powerlines. We had a nice staring contest until some other bikers came along and scared her off.

Recommended Route:
Nashua to Ayer and back. 22 miles. Trail starts off Gilson Road or Main Dunstable Road in Nashua and runs south.
