Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

, from Chelmsford Summary: We ventured to the midstate after reading about it in Mtn. Bike mag. After starting at the base of Watatic we headed south across the street and up into the hills. What a great ride! It's not all that technical compared to Lynn, but the trail is narrow, steep, and full of twisted roots and rocks. This trail requires you to be in shape, have extra spare parts, and be prepared for the long haul. You can ride as long as you want, but either have to turn around or have a car at the other end to get you home. At one point we stopped and couldn't believe that we were in Massachusetts, you are out there in the big time wilderness and the scenery is stunning. Cross the Fellsway with Lynn woods, then add 25 miles of deep old growth forest and you have a certified adventure. This is an all day type of ride and you can start from a number of places, but be prepared for any type of problem because you'll be in deliverance country if you get stuck. I highly recommend this ride for the quality of terrain (tough), the scenery, and to get away (way away) from it all. Not for beginners, or downhill types who don't like huge hill climbs. Recommended Route: Start at Mt Watatic and go any way that you choose Other recommended trails in the same area: Gilbert state forest, Harold Parker
