very tough, best downhill in the area, great for training. very quiet trail, not many riders, watch out for enviromentals near the res. Can't ride there, but you have to go past it to continue. A couple great peaks with some good views off skinner mtn. Don't sneek up on any northampton lesbos in the woods. ops! They may beat you up!
great trail off rt 47 from the center of s.hadly past skinner mountain entrance.... it covers all 7 mountains....start west and go east.

Summary: I live near here and went up for the first time last weekend. Very quiet, I was up there on Memorial day weekend and didn't run into one person. Vast maze of trails which criss-cross the powerline you see on the map. Every type of terrain you can imagine from smoothed banked dirt trails, single-track, climbing, level, downhill, boulders, lots of water and mud. There's is plenty of nice scenery running the full range from forest to swamps. The streams concentrate around the reservoir. You can ride around the perimeter of the the springs (the reservoir)and several trails branch off from there. I think it would take me months to hit every branch of the trail. A very satisfying ride. I will go again soon.
Recommended Route: I would drive up Route 116 from South Hadley. Go by Mount Holyoke College (if coming from the south) and either go up Woodbridge St. and then right on Pearl St. and left on Lithia Springs Rd, or stay on 116 North until you see Gagne's package store/gas station and take a left on Pearl St and then the road forks right onto Lithia Springs. Park at the gate and start pedaling! There are signs to the Springs if you want to start with that first and then pick any of the numerous branches off of the trail which circles the reservoir. There is a yellow blazed trail. If your are a slow rider, pack your bug dope.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Off Goff park in Amherst there is a short one mile but scenic trail which goes from Goff park to the Norwottuck Rail trail. It runs along a stream, through open farm fields, across a sandy part and into the woods. Nice short trail, usually not too busy cept on weekends. I did get bitten by a damn dog who wasn't on a leash so I recommend bringing your gun.

Summary: I've got to stick up for the Lythia Springs area -- I think Andrew (previous review) didn't give it enough credit. There are about 20+ miles of trails in the south side of the Holyoke Range, west of Route 116 and east of Rte 47. Its a mix of fire roads, ATV trails, some singletrack, and there is even a fun dirt bike course with pits, jumps, and steep banked turns...its hard to find but thats part of the adventure, right? As a whole Lythia may not provide the stimulation that the Batchelor Street trails offer, but they are MUCH less crowded and more scenically beautiful. And who wants to ride in the same place all the time? If you make a long long climb to a lookout where you can see the reservoir way off in the distance at the bottom of the valley, and then take a long fun downhill that spits you out at the same reservoir ten harrowing minutes later, then maybe you'll appreciate Lythia and want to return.
Recommended Route: There is more than people realize...
