Emerald Necklace
2 reviews
 3.5 of 5

Parks of the trail are dirt sidwalk, and other parks are narrow dirt trails with some small hills. This is not a single continuous ride, and is very light. A good after work "stress reliever" ride that can be done as an out-and-back loop in 30-45 minutes (if you live in Boston/Brookline). There are some interesting bits near Jamaica Pond, and some hills in the stretch along the Jamaica Way. Note that while much of the "official" Emerald Necklace is paved paths, there are many side trails (dirt) that offer some additional challenges. But all in all this is a beginner-level set of trails. The biggest draw is its proximity to downtown Boston for those who work in town (or perhaps commute via bike and are looking for another way home that is more challenging than the street.)

Trail Directions
Emerald Necklace is a chain of parks and dirt/paved sidewalks that loop around Boston. The best sections for any *light* mountain biking are in the Fenway, Jamaica Pond and Franklin Park areas. These are all (more or less) along the stretch of road that transitions from the Fenway to the Jamaica Way to the VFW Parkway. Enter the Fenway park of the trail near the Longwood Medical area at the Fenway MBTA stop (aka Landmark Center building aka old Sears Robucks catalog warehouse on Brookline Ave.)

Summary:
it's alright. Mostly paved paths, crowded in nice weather on weekends.

Recommended Route:
Down into Franklin Park

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The bike path along both sides of the charles river has a number of short, wooded runs branching off of it. They're all west of the Harvard Ave. bridge. Just ride along and keep your eyes open. Nothing too challenging but keep your eyes open. After the end of the paved trail on the South side, keep going a little way, in a parking lot there's an entrance to about a quarter mile of trail.

Ridden Trail:
Every few months

Reviewed by: Luke , from Malden, MA

Summary:
The Emerald Necklace is a good escape from darting in and out of traffic riding around the rest of Boston. There are quite a few nice dirt trails throughout the entire park. This is far from a wooded trail system like you would find outside of the city, but for the urban riders of the area, this is great for a cruise and far from taxing

Recommended Route:
Not too much of a reccomendation, all decent trails

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Middlesex Fells; Great Brook Farm, Carlisle; Georgetown-Rowley State Forest
