Douglas State Forest

From the upper lot go to the gate at the far corner from where you entered. Follow this wide single track past a small field on your right, and continue until you see the right for the Coffee House Loop. Take right on Coffee House Loop (intermediate to advanced singletrack). Continue on this trail over a pair of wooden bridges. After the second wooden bridge there is a barely detectable right hand turn where the Coffee House Lopp continues. Do NOT take this right. Continue straight. You will cross a cinder trail (Southern New England Trunkline Trail). Continue straight on this singletrack until you hit a wide fire road on your left. Take this left and follow up (and up and up and up) the dirt road. You will cross an intersection with another fire road and continue up. At the top of the hill you'll reach a gate just before a (newly) paved road. Cross the road and take the left option. Follow this singletrack to the "T" intersection at the end. Take a left onto a wide singletrack and follow this until you hit the raod again. Back over the road and into a kick ass down hill (the same hill you just came up on the fire road), technical, rocky singletrack. Pick your line wisely or you will be walking that beautiful piece of equipment. At the bottom of the single track take a left onto a fire road. At the intersection with another fire road take a right and fly down more of the same hill you just went up. At the bottom of the hill take a right and backtrack to the cinder trail. When you hit the cinder trail you can continue back onto the Coffee House from whence you came or tak a left on the cinder trail (which sucks, but is brief) and then take your first right onto a wide trail that will bring you back to the entrance road to the park. There are plenty of other trails throughout the forest so explore a bit if you like. This is the first trail I learned well at Douglas and is still a favorite with me. There are two other (free) trailheads in the forest. One on Rte 16 and the other on Wallis St. Enjoy!

Trail Directions
Pick up Rte 16W from Rte 146 or 16E from Rte 395. From Rte 16 you will find a brown State Forest sign. Follow signs to Douglas State Forest. When you are in the entrance to the forest you will come to a "Y" in the road with a $ collector booth. Keep right and park in the upper lot. (If its off season you can park right at this gate and ride to the upper lot). If the mood strikes you, you may want to bring a bathing suit as there is a beach at the pavillion section of the park (near the parking area). Grab a map at the toll gate area.

Summary:
For the first time rider this is a technical trail. The consistency of rock and boulders will test most biker’s skill level. The climbs are moderate, but technical, so go easy. My thinking on this ride was to take it slow, spin, try to see my line and gear up and down accordingly. Once I found my comfort level with my spin it helped with my downhill. Its rocky and grabby so pay attention to your seat position and don't be tense. The trail was beautiful. There were a lot of sloppy water passages, which created a little extra fun and mud. You’ll roll over several sections of board walk bridges that take you thru the cedar forest which was breathe taking. This ride will beat you up a little, so be ready for anything. Carry a good supply of tools, water and goo, because for a 12.5-mile ride it could take an afternoon. There were several sections where I needed to get off and walk, which makes me want to go back. Insurance is only as good as the provider, but missing an entire season due to ego is still missing an entire season.

Recommended Route:
coffee house loop into the cedar forest

here is a review from Andrew for Boston:

There is some excellent riding here (the other reviewer that said it's too hard should stick to rails-to-trails). For a real challenge, find the North/South Trail that heads down in to Rhode Island. Slick, mossy rocks that don't get much traffic. You will eventually hit a fire road that heads west/north to a pond. Head back east on either another fire road or motorcycle-cut singletrack. There is more fun stuff around the tristate marker. Douglass park rangers and workers have always been nice to mt bikers.

could have said it better my self! The Tri-State marker is quite a sight, and the downhill trail leaving it is a 45 degree test of faith. Plenty of riding here. easily could spend hours in this park. Spring time will turn a rock trail into a 8 inch river. The Mid-State Trail covers most of the fun. There are a few wooden bridges to get across swamp/river area. Once you get to the RI-MA border (marked by a engraved stone) take take trail into RI. use the motorcycle-cut trails. The fire roads offer little excitment. As a beginner the rocky parts kick my ass. but I still come back for more!

Recommended Route:
Park at RT 16 Mid-State Trail head. head south on the Mid-State. cross at least one paved road. most of the loop trails can be found after crossing the S.N.E.T (old rail trail).

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hodges Village Dam & Buffumville Lake and Park, Oxford

Summary:
This is a pretty techincal rocky singletrack. I'm a beginner and had to walk alot of the really rocky stuff (some areas will push you - good learning experince - none of the really tough stuff are really all that long), but there are miles of trails to explore. Alot of the singletrack is not on the .gov maps. Fire trails are loomy - you'll bite right into it. I was hiking here this weekend, and there were about 15 dirtbike riders ripping the trail to sh!t. So becareful of the ruts. They're not supposed to ride there (wish I knew how to stop that). Overall alot of fun to ride. Bring a first aid kit...lol...

Recommended Route:
Midstate trail single track from trail head off or rte16

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Dam (oxford), purgatory, my backyard...

Summary:
This place has some excellent trails and some not so excellent trails.. The rocky sections are awesome - all 100% rideable if you like the technical stuff.. Some of the "trails" on the state map are fire roads - sandy fire roads.. So try to avoid them

Recommended Route:
Go to BIKERAG.COM and see review.. There is a trail map and some pictures..
