Weekend Warrior Summary: The Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT), since 19 May '05 is a paved biking, running, walking only trail that runs for 22 miles along the C&O Canal and Potomac River from Big Pool (Exit 12, I-70) through Hancock (Exits 3 and 1, I-70) to Pearre Station. For the most part, it is a shaded, smooth and nearly a flat ride offering scenic views of the floor of the Appalachian Mountains the canal and river. Wild life abundant most times of the year. Recommended Route: Recommend starting at Pennsylvania Ave in Hancock which is about mile post 10. you can either go est toward Big Pool (more open) or west toward Pearre Station (more shaded and I believe more scenic).
