Potomac Pallisades County Park

 4.5 of 5

A small local park (mainly used to walk dogs)with an emerging network of short challenging trails. Short loops of existing trails are being spruced up and new legs are being added with some technical sections. This is basically a quick way to get to Macarthur Ave from Sangamore area neighborhoods on sweet single track. Go in on the gravel and follow the first tread to the right. Follow the trail up a short rise past the tree swing and make the next right... this puts you on a fun downhill to Macarthur Blvd where you can pick up the pavement on your way to Cabin John or C and O or the pub... Also can be a sweet xc climb from Macarthur up to Wissioming/Mass Ave .... Look for the stick with surveyors tape on the east side of the road between Sangamore and Walhonding Rd. Cross the floor joist bridge over the mud hole and climb it!

Summary:
This hill is a real push going up but once at the top you may decide to think twice about going down, best after the rain, watch the slick ramps!

Recommended Route:
Same as previous person, look for the surveyors stick with the red ribbon on top, right side of McAurthur going toward great falls

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Declaria Trail by the water plant on the Montgomery/DC line.

Summary:
Someone has been buffing this track out. It is raked and cleared of debris frequently. Whoever built this trail has put some time in to make it fast for those who follow. Many thanks to the trailmaster!

Recommended Route:
Down the (seven?) switchbacks.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The usual suspects.

Summary:
Tight switchbacks on this steep hillside. I use this as part of my Sunday am routine which is- ride down the snaking single track at PPCP to Macarthur go rt follow a couple miles and cross over the Cabin John Bridge go right into Cabin John Park find and follow CJ trail ride/hike the first 1/2 mile then cuiser single track to the end and back... The grind up the PPCP is killer at the end of this ride. I was psyched to see this area posted on this site. I thought I was the only one using this trail.

Recommended Route:
Down and up on my way to bigger and better things.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Go west in this order Fuita & Crested Butte CO, Moab & Red Canyon & Gooseberry Mesa UT, Bootleg Canyon-Boulder City NV, Upper North Side-Mt. Tamalpias, San Francisco CA

Summary:
Short but worth checking out if you are nearby. Views of the Potomac in winter. Nice to see some new trails being built in the area. Let's hope this place expands and continues to grow into a hillside playground of more of the same. The swing is fun and there are some interesting "treasures" along the sides of the trail.

Recommended Route:
A steep but ridable climb up the "pallisades" or a great downhill blast through the forest depending on where you start. Wissioming to Macarthur is down.
