Northwest Branch
5 reviews
 3.8 of 5

This trail changes with the seasons. There is a windy singletrack that follows the edge of the Northwest Branch creek. Also a (usually) gravel utilities road that runs adjacent to this single track. The single track is fairly windy, sometimes it shoots you ought towards overhangs so be careful especially if the water is low. Some sandy washes to look for, a couple of dips that will give you a nice ejection. If it has rained, be prepared to mud bog it. Don't stop when you get to what appears to be the end, about 4 miles in. Cross the shallow ford straight ahead and head to the left. The trail here is a bit faster and will take you all the way to Colesville Rd. If you are brave, like I was till I fell off once, ride the tops of the drain pipes where they cross over the hollers. This is a fun local trail. If it get's routine, try it at night, in the snow, naked etc...

Summary:
This trail is good place for a beginner to learn how to control your bike. There are lots of trees and little turns you have to do so you'll learn to control your bike and not fall. a very few logs but some hill climbing, down hill and dips. like I said, a good place to learn to control your bike and get in shape.
As someone mentioned, vegetation can get pretty thick...and also some thorny plants that will stick to you. So watch out for those.

Recommended Route:
start from trail behind Spring Brook HS, entering from Spring Brook drive. Once you hit the stream, go left. Keep on going (about 3 miles) till you hit Route 29. Go back on the other side (this is actual Northwest branch) of stream for about 3.0 miles. Come back across little bridge and come back to where you started (2 miles). It can take...2.5 to 3.5 hours..depending on who you go with!

Ridden Trail:
Once a year

Summary:
The best time of year on the left (northeast) bank is not the fall. It is the second half of April, when the forest floor is COVERED with beautiful blue flowers and other interesting spring vegetation. It's a wonderland down there. Riding in from Kemp Mill, there is a fork in the road. The right fork takes you along right bank by way of the gravel (horsepath) road mentioned above. The left fork takes you over the branch on a nice bridge to the left bank, but, to continue downstream by this, you must turn right on the less-traveled pathway. In summer, this pathway become very difficult or impossible to follow, and you can find yourself in a trackless wilderness of briars. In spring, summer, and fall, it's much easier to follow. It's easiest to follow, however, in the upstream direction, so you can go downstream by the right bank, and then upstream on the left. The pipes mentioned above now cannot be ridden over. They are encased in metal cages that evidently are intended to keep them from collapsing. But, in the old days, they were VERY fun to ride accross.

Recommended Route:
Easiest and most interesting to enter from the dead ends of adjacent neighborhood roads in the Springbrook neighborhood off New Hampshire Avenue just south of Springbrook High School and St. John's Roman Catholic Church--or by using the end of Tanley Road, the next road south along New Hampshire.

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GO ON THE GRAVEL PATH!! THAT'S A HORSE TRAIL AND YOUR BIKE WILL BE TAKEN AWAY!!! Make sure to cross the creek to a reeeally thin path. It's fun, though, not the fastest. Go in fall when the plants have died otherwise the growth is unimaginably thick. Make sure to stop at Wheaton Cycles for your pre ride maitenance!

Recommended Route:
Off of Kempmill

Summary:
This is an all right ride. I do it b/c I live right next to it, so it's very convienient. It's pretty flat until you get too Wheat regianal and the stables, but that has some interesting technical trails, although most of them are horse trails.

Recommended Route:
Get on to the trail from the WSSC parking lot (at the waterfall) along 29. Bike along creek all the way to Wheaton regional, then bike on trails thorugh there.
