Catoctin Trail
22 reviews
 4.5 of 5

Four Sections: 1: Trailhead to Hamburg Rd. five miles: expert, severe rocks, severe ascent/decent, stream crossing. VERY challenging. 2: Hamburg Rd. to Delauter Rd. 2.5 miles, Intermediate, less severe but still rocky, lots of fun jumps and challenging ups and downs. 3. Delatuer to Tower Rd. AKA Fishing Creek, 2 miles, intermediate, stream crossing, getting easier 4. Tower to Mountaindale, 2 miles, Intermidiate, less rocks, scenic overlook .25 miles north of Mountaindale. You can pick up any of the stages at trailheads at each road crossing. I suggest you skip stage one until you work 2-4. Very pretty watershed area, few hikers/bikers, look out for hunters (stay on the trail). Very quiet and peaceful

Summary:
Great trail. Rode the Blue trail from Gambrill out to the look out, up and over Bob's Hill and then took the road back (7 hours with a lunch break and a few mechanicals). Lots of great downhills, rock gardens, and killer climbs. Just a great trail that you can ride as long as you want on.

Recommended Route:
Blue Trail from Gambrill State Park out to the lookout, down to the ranger station, up Bob's Hill and down the backside, from there you can take the rode back to Gambrill (about 27 miles or so total) or take the road back to the lookout and ride Blue back (closer to 35 miles)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
None - first time to the area

Summary:
Extremely difficult. Rock, rooty, hilly, rugged, technical, and any other adjective that describes hard singletrack. Some parts are unrideable going up so look for detours (still extremely hard, just rideable). best to make loops with other trails anyways.

Recommended Route:
follow the blue blazes for this trail. better to make loops with other trails

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Other trails in Gambrill and Watershed, Greenbrier

Summary:
Just like everyone says, very rocky and challenging. Tons o' fun for experienced riders. very rough for entry level riders. Lots of Dirt Roads on Frederick Watershed land for Novices. Nice area, not too crowded, close to D.C./Baltimore, Challenging

Recommended Route:
Park on Hamburg Road near Yellow Springs. Just after the last house from bottom there is a dirt road that comes in from the left. Ride up there to the Catoctin Trail. Or ride up Hamburg Road to Gambrill Park Road, turn left, ride to the Catoctin trail head. Ride the Catoctin trail over a ridge or two, turn off and go down old logging roads/trail through Frederick Watershed land back down to Hamburg Road. This way you can ride up a road and ride down the gnarly rocky terrain. Or shuttle it for multi laps. Get a map.

Summary:
At the bottom of the first hill is a pair of sick freeride trails on either side of the blue. I had a blast crashing 6 times. hopefully will return soon to work more on the tech. I loved the less extreme downhills with little jumpers and rollers. The rad freeride scared me I could only do a few of the obstacles without crashing, but at least i tried.

Recommended Route:
Follow the blue blaze around the catoctin trail from hamburg rd.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Schaefer Farm, Loch Raven
