Gwynns Falls Trail

The trial is part of the Chesapeake Bay Gateway Network. This is primarily a beginner trail with no drops. Some singletrack and fire roads. Very safe, clean, and moderately used since it's only 3yrs old. A few sections allow for fast downhill runs and good climbs depending on which direction you ride. A great training ground for beginners and family rides.
From I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) - Take exit # 16 (Route 70 East, Park & Ride). Merge right and take Security Blvd to Forest Park Ave and make a right. Turn right onto Franklintown Rd making a left at the stop sign to continue on Franklintown Rd for approximately 1.5 miles to the Trailhead at Winans Meadow on the left.
From I-83 (Jones Falls Expressway) - Take westbound North Ave exit. Continue past Hilton Parkway and make a left turn onto Morris Rd. Turn left onto Franklintown Rd. The Trailhead at Leon Day Park is on the right.
From Downtown Baltimore - Take Franklin St westbound (or I-70 in the city) to Edmondson Ave. Take Hilton {Parkway northbound and make a left onto North Ave. Turn left onto Morris Rd and left onto Franklintown Rd. Look for the Trailhead at Leon Day Park on the right.
Summary: Quiet. Very. The way from 695 is closed, so try the alt route on 83. If you do go 695 head uphill by the Detour sign.. then turn left into the dead end and park there like we did. 2nd trail we visited here in the Baltimore area, its quiet. We stuck mostly to the fireroads b/c my girlfriend doesnt have her new bike yet (using a friends bike). But it was not technical what-so-ever. and pretty nice ride overall, looking forward to exploring the single track.

Summary: The trail is a beginner course but can be used as a XC training ground as it's not large but can be ridden for endurance. The trail is very safe and clean. Reasonably maintained, the trail affords families a great bike outing. The are 4-5 trails off of the main trail path that offer a challenge to the beginner rider as they have some fast singletracks and some tough climbs that are technical in some sections. The trail is overall a good trail for riders of beginner to intermediate skill. This is a great family trail also.
Recommended Route: Begin at Winans Meadow Trailhead. Climb the grass hill behind the pavillion and bear right to continue up to the Outward Bound buildings. Turn right and ride the road about 200yards to the trail on the right where to wood begin. This trail is a good fast section which ends at a huge fallen oak tree that you have to dismount to crawl under. Then continue down an fast singletrack until you get to the stream and turn left and follow the rest of the trail from there up to tough steep climb and then and nice fast wide downhill that exits at a fireroad. From here you may either go upthe steep fireroad or to gradual fireroad. The steep fireraod will lead to a section of the park called named Carrie Murray. Once there you can bear right to ride up to Windsor Mill Rd and turn left for a short ride back to the Outward Bound buildings. From there simply follow your path in the tough hill you came up at the beginning for a fun, fast downhill ride back to the Winans Meadow Trailhead. This route starts with a tough climb but ends with a fun downhill.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Patapsco/Avalon, Loch Raven, Robert E Lee, Susquehanna St Park
