Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: Ok, the C&O towpath is not really a mountain bike trail; it's really just a more or less flat fireroad but it's still a very nice scenic ride. The C&O towpath can be as hard and as grueling as you wish to make it. Riding the trail in two days is doable but definitely calls for above average endurance. If you really want to make it tough on yourself try doing it in one day. Alternatively, you can ride the trail over three days stopping to camp, take cool pictures and do some exploring. Whatever you choose the C&O is worth riding.
If you are thinking about riding this trail in a 2 day push or less I have a trip report and photo link posted at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/coTowpath/message/3255 Recommended Route: Cumberland, MD to Georgetown D.C. (slightly downhill)

Cross Country Rider Summary: This is a great trail for the beginner to get in some riding on their new bike, or for anyone who wants to get away and look at some nice scenery. If your travels bring you anywhere close to the towpath, bring your bike for a nice little day trip, or take a few days and ride the whole thing. Recommended Route: Cumberland Md to DC. But if you only have a few hours, Shepherdstown to Harpers Ferry is pretty cool.

Cross Country Rider Summary: This is not really a MTB trail but flat ride. THis is a nice place to go for a long ride with your lady. This is not a tech. type of trail but a long calm relaxing ride (unless your saddle sucks). The aerobic difficulty is based on an all day ride. Recommended Route: Georgetown to Cumberlin or visa versa Other recommended trails in the same area: dont know of any

, from Kingsville, MD USA Summary: Want to get a way for a few days on your bike and let the world go it's own way? Then the C & O towpath is for you. Share the greenspace with turtles, snakes, blue herons, black squirrels and ferrets and a cool plunge into the Potomac is only a few feet away. I got a bunch of my friends together and 18 out of 19 made it in 4 days. Camping was fun and easy with a sagwagon. The car shuttle thing was the only problem on such a long trip. The biggest challenge is the distance. This is a trip every biker should do at least once. Recommended Route: Cumberland to Georgetown Other recommended trails in the same area: NCR/ Hertitage trail - 40 miles

, from Wheaton Summary: Flat, wide, gravel path. Nothing technical or challenging. Good to stretch the legs out or ride when everywhere else is too muddy. Some sections are beautiful, but it can get pretty boring. Recommended Route: find that flat wide thing between the river and the canal. It's not hard. Other recommended trails in the same area: Depends on which part you live near. Around DC, check out Cabin John, Seneca, Shaeffer, Riverbend, Difficult Run, Wakefield/Accotink
