Camden Snow Bowl

This is a NORBA trail and considered one of the toughest. Starting at the base lodge the course goes to the right and then up the slope of trail 9. About half way up it cuts across the face of the hill over to trail 1. There are some nasty water traps across the face with deep ruts. A short turn up slope 1 and the into the woods. The wood trail is very technical with rocks, fallen trees, stone walls, deep descents, wood bridges, mud, etc. Good pedal awareness will keep you from some nasty spills. All single track through the woods. Coming out of the woods you cut across slope 7 back into a small wood section then down slope 10 and back to base lodge. It is a great technical challenge and you get the added benefit of being at one of Maine's coast towns.

Trail Directions
From Camden South on Rt. 1 about a half mile. Take a right on Hosmer Rd. Drive about 5 miles and follow signs. Make a left after the lake. From Rt. 1 South Drive past Maine Sport on left. Continue about a mile, 100 yards past the first traffic light take a left on Hosmer Rd. after the Subway. Continue on for about 5 miles following signs. Make a left after the lake.

Summary:
This is my home hill, so I do my best to ride and/or dig here 3x a week. I realize the season's winding down here in the NE though wanted to get a more thorough review of our current trail inventory and what our local NEMBA chapter has been up to.

The trails on Ragged Mountain range from solid intermediate to solid advanced with a few bits of beginner-friendly. It might not be the biggest elevation gain, though I promise you'll be hard pressed to find a more challenging and grueling 800' gain. I've been riding 20 years and still cannot clean the ascent. Ryan Leech can though, fwiw :)

22 Tacks is the most recent beginner trail; 16' wide graded multi-use, though the grade is at places quite steep and many novice riders push those spots. Oh Chute is the other beginner trail, about 1/4 mile single track loop.

We're working on finishing up our first machine-built gravity flow trail, final name is still being decided. It's a ~3500' long berm and feature-filled descent from the top of the chairlift to about mid-mountain. Definitely more on the intermediate side of things so folks looking for big hucks and drops might be a bit disappointed. However, so far we've only seen huge grins as riders of all ages get a flavor change from the highly technical descents that are the rest of our trails.

The other more recent addition are the cross country single track to the east of Snow Bowl in the Ragged Mountain Preserve. RMP is a solid 4 mile loop of undulating terrain. There is no bail out option though, so make sure you've got what you need for an out and back ride.

If you want to hit up one of the days the chair is running check the Snow Bowl calendar, though these can be hard to find so you can also ask on the McNEMBA FB page. We truly want people to come ride here and share our trails, let us know questions and we'll do our best to help out.

I've also been signing the trails like crazy this year and have made and posted around 70 trail signs. I'm also working on signing all trail intersections and getting these on the map for next year. I'd love to hear how clear they are.

Recommended Route:
XC shortest loop: Jibe->Tempest->22 Tacks

XC with moderate climbing: Jibe->Freebooter->Round the Mountain->Five Brooks->Freebooter->Tempest->22 Tacks (smooth and wide) or Bitter End (tight and twisty with a couple tech sections).

XC with additional moderate climb: Jibe->Keelhaul->Pitch Pole->up Tempest->Pitch Pole (on the downhill leg). Be very aware that Tempest is a DH trail; if the lift isn't running there typically aren't big bikes flying down it, though enter at your own risk and be able to hear bikes approaching. Pitch Pole ends on Jibe, so you can follow either of the above directions at that point.

XC with long climb: Jibe->Keelhaul->Pitch Pole. Pitch Pole used to be called the red trail and loops across the top of the chair. It reconnects with Jibe mid-mountain. If you're looking for a longer loop, take Freebooter out through RMP and back, otherwise descend on 22 Tacks. The lower mountain section of Tempest is also a lot of fun; it merges with Bitter End for the final tech sections.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Technical Downhill: Get to the top of the chair (push or lift day), follow signs to Tempest and ride that to the bottom. Tempest is the project of one of our most active local builders and thus tends to receive a lot of tweaks.

Gravity Fun Ride: Get to the top of the chair, if you're facing the peak go left and then hang a right up the ledge slab of the Upper Lookout ski run; it flattens out. Descending down this is our version of slick rock. On the descent come back past the top of the chair to the beginning of the gravity trail. Right now it's signed "Natty Tread" though that will be changing to "Dreadnought" or some other nautical-themed name. This trail drops you out on Pitch Pole just above Keelhaul.

Summary:
It's one heck of a climb to the top with no road access to allow shuttling. Lifts weren't running as I had hoped, I thing they only run those for special events. Anyways, man up and get to the top because you won't regret it! There are some fantastic views to take in and the riding is very nice. Trails are well groomed and well marked for the most part. Something for every skill level but if you're a true downhill biker you may be disappointed. Very few drops/jumps and the obstacles are mediocre. But if you just want to bomb down a hill then it's great.

Summary:
i'll tell yabout my first trip. myself, mr. ryry flanagan, and sir curty muse. relatively difficult to find if you rely on google maps...

got there, talked to a couple locals. was a little discouraged after asking where the trails were. i got the response, "there are two trails, the red trail and the yellow trail, the red trail is about 5 miles". not sure where these kids were coming from. we took the red trail, it was > 5 mi. it started with a horrendous climb. i'm a pretty avid rider and being the stoic b*stard that i am, i pushed myself until i nearly had a heart attack. i was both ashamed and astonished at the integrity of the climb. at about 2/3 of the ride up, we were all pretty go home. blah blah blah, ryan is hurrying me.

conclusion:

amazing...absolutely amazazing!!!!!!!!!! ride down. 5/5, best time, i've had riding in maine

Summary:
This is a great trail! Very technical with lots of slick rocks and wet roots. Parts of the trails are very twisty, and up and down (cool!).

It was a damp week when I was in Camden to ride the trail so there was some mud on the trail where the trees provide constant shade from the sun. The beginning of the trail was a lot of climbing, and the end of the trail is some pretty hairy descending (check your brakes before riding this trail). The trail really demands your full attention. Really cool stuff.

I've ridden a lot of rocky east coast singletrack; this trail may have been the most fun of all of them. I will definitely ride this trail every time I am in Maine. I wish I could be there during a NORBA race. It would be cool to see how easy the pros make it look.

Thanks again to Cindy (a local from Rockland) for showing the three of us where the best trails were.

Recommended Route:
Get a map from Maine Sport Outfitters down the road on Route 1, and follow the trail!

Summary:
Great trail! Absolute favorite. Would give 10 stars if I could. Very technical, lots of singletrack, definitly for experienced riders. They hold some NORBA races here whitch I plan to attend. Been over the bars more than a few times. Cut some new trails last year. Nice to see others out there riding. Also nice to go hiking but be careful we fly down the mountain. Great bunch of guys I ride with, makes for a great time. My suggestion is to bring plenty of water tools, and some spare parts because mechanical failures are very possible.

Recommended Route:
Don't go straight up the t-bar unless you got a good set of lungs and legs on ya. Kinda zig-zag across the mountain.
