Kennebec Highlands

The trail is primarily old logging roads that double as
snowmobile trail in winter.
Start at the Round Top trailhead on Watson Pond Rd
(just before Blueberry Hill).
Follow the Wildflower Estates rd past several house on
the left. Do not ride up the Round Top trail as it
is for hikers. Make the first fight on to the Goat
Path and follow for about 1 mile where it intersects
and crosses the Round top hiking trail. Also
at this point the South Vienna Mt trail comes
down on the left. Continue on the Goat path and
it becomes the Kennebec Highlands Trail. As you ride
, keep making lefts at all the intersections (a few
private roads and the Sanders Hill hiking Loops).
The Kennebec Highlands trail swings left (to the SSW)
around the front of Vienna Mt. Look for a slighltly
overgrown trail (The Singletrack) on the left. The
Singletrack climbs moderately up through somewhat technical
terrain. When it levels, look for a house ahead and to
the left. the Singletrack swings around to the right and
skirts a field on its right side. At the bottom of
the field the Singletrack intersects with a better
maintained dirt road. Turn Left and follow to another dirt
road intersection. Turn left again and follow this road as it
heads NNE then swings down, around and back to the south,
descending a long, cobbly hill. Just before this road dead-ends
at a pile of logs, look for a single track snowmobile trail that
cuts off to the right. Make this right turn and follow the trail
as it goes through some boggy areas past a small swampy pond
on the left. The trail then climbs moderately past a trail coming
in from the right (this trail climbs up to the blueberry
barrens on the summit of Vienna Mt.). Continue climbing, then
take the first trail on the left which is the South Vienna Mt. trail.
(Going straight here will take the rider to the SSW and eventually McGaffey
Mountain where there is a trail to the right, down into the village of
Vienna). Follow the S. Vienna Mt trail down a very long, steep and rocky
descent that eventually brings you back to the intersection of the Round Top
hiking trail and the Goat Path. follow this to the right, back
to the Wildflower Estates rd and left back to the parking area.
I didn''t have a computer with me but I would guess-timate the loop
to be about 8 miles?
It is helpful to pick up a trail map for the Kennebec Highlands at
Day''s Store in the Village of Belgrade Lakes.
There are many options for other loops and its tough to get lost as all downhills
eventually end up on a main road or body of water.
If you are vacationing in the Belgrade Lakes area, this is
a great place to ride!
This great loop (and other options) can be found
in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine. From Augusta,
follow 27 N past rt. 135 intersection. Look for the Castle
Island rd about 5 miles past rt. 135 intersection. Make a
left on to Castle Island rd and follow to first stop sign (West Rd).
continue on Castle Island rd, cross over 2 bridges at Long Pond narrows
and continue to "T" intersection with Watson Pond rd.
Turn right on to Watson Pond rd and after the second hill, look
for Wildflower Estates rd on the left. Park in the lot adjacent
to the road.
