River Trail

3-4 mile (one way) out and back to outter Rte. 26/100. 100% single track. As you enter the trail, bear right after .1 mile and follow the pink ribbons on the BRAND NEW single track that dumps you out right on the main river trail after about .6 miles of very technical singletrack.
Take Allen Ave. out past Northgate shopping center. Turn left onto Summit St. Turn right off Summit onto Curtis, and then right again onto Overset Rd. Overset dead-ends after a block or two at the trail head.
Summary: After reading the reviews on this trail my friend and I took a trip to try it out. He rode his SS stock P1, and i rode my freeride hardtail with 2.5s and a 6" Sherman, also a Singlespeed.
The main river trail is well marked and for the most part flat and smooth to ride. It does roll around a bit and is fun to ride fast...no problem riding it. The developed trails are very nicely built and someone obviously took a lot of care to minimalize erosion. (e.g. waterbars and smooth fast stuff)
I see that we should have taken a right when we hit the top of the river trail and over the bridge, but we looped around and checked out the section by the falls (past the "No Tresspassing" Signs..teehee). There are some nice rough singletrack down there...one of the downhills got me into the 'oh shi.. i better slow down before i hit a tree' mindset. Good stuff, probably shoulda brought the gears for those though.
There are some dirtjumps near one of the trailheads...sort of a spine and a small hip. Those kept us entertained for a little bit; to whoever made those...MAKE MORE! ;)
I am assuming that most of the 'bridges' that people are talking about are wide enough for people walking the trails to walk across. A good 2 feet or so. If you get bored with them, try to wheelie/manual or completely hop the shorter ones. Didnt find any wooden stunts like i had hoped...maybe another trip is in order though. Can anyone clarify if they are still there?
All in all, the trip was good with minimal mud. I would recommend going if you havnt yet. I think that someone should do somthing with those giant rocks you can see from the bottom of the river trail. Maybe some natural drop or ladder drop? :) props to the trailbuilders!

Summary: great trail, other trailhead is in falmouth, near old presumscot bridge dam, follow lower falls road to a dirt road leading off the turnaround, trailhead is at the end of that road. great trail, it ends near hannaford in falmouth, which is just across the bridge you come out at. if you go under the bridge crossing the railroad tracks, the second part of this trail begins on the portland side of the tracks. this trail is sweet, ends behind corsetti's store. if you go towards dunkin donuts, and cross a bridge going over a river, then take a right off the bridge, you end up on another sweet trail that dumps you out past home depot. all these trails rule.

Summary: Tom obviously does not know all the variations of this trail as it is a very technically demanding trail. The lower trail that follows the river is suitable for beginners, but there are numerous loops on the upper ridges that are strenuous climbs with tricky descents. Also, the bridges on the section between Blackstrap and Riverside are really hairy. The majority of this trail is no place for the novice. The major drawback to this area is the abundance of poison ivy. It is everywhere!

Summary: this trail is pretty easy, not too technical 1-track along the river. there are a couple good but fairly easy log rides, with 3-4 foot drops at the end, and numerous bridges over drainage ditches that range from 6 inches to 2.5 feet wide and a couple feet too close to 6 feet high. not much fear factor invovled on any of the stunts. ive only ever seen one teeter totter out there, and its pretty sketch. the board itself is wayy to short, so it can be pretty hard to clean. again not very fast trail, but not physically demanding, with little climbing. this trail is really nice for beeing so close to p-town
Recommended Route: same as all the other ways
Other recommended trails in the same area: atherton, reid, powerlines can be cool

Summary: this is the opposite most people ride this trail. Most come upstream, this is headed down. Awesome single track riding. Not too fast, nice bridges and chutes, and a section called Highway to Hell that will test the size of your b@lls. Lots of fun spots and great scenery. Make sure to yell at the golfers on the other side of the river when you pass by, they love that! :)
Recommended Route: Take 302 north from portland til you hit Corsetti's on the right. You can park behind the store (they are pretty cool about it) and head in right from there.
Other recommended trails in the same area: This trail continues along the river from 302 to warren ave. Most skip this part, but I'm telling you right now the work I've seen out there is good. A couple guys named Kevin and Brett have made some killer bridges and a couple teeter totters too! The trail continues along the left bank. The trail is no longer than an hour long, but fun if you like high bridges and the technical stuff.
