Gardner Creek Trail

It is an old woods road that comes out on the Gardner Creek Road so it doesn't loop back around. We leave another vehicle on the other end or bike back to Washburn (about 6 miles) when we go. This trail has everything...the first mile or so is a rocky downhill with washouts throughout the trail. Then it turns into a slight uphill leading to a big hill that always kicks our butts. After the big hill is the funnest part of the trail. It's fairly technical with logs you must ride over, deep ruts you must try and stay out of, and there's even a set of log steps where the road washed out. Then the trail turns muddy for a while with spring water that runs right down the trail and a series of fairly deep puddles. Then the push along the flats to the creek. Cross the creek and you've got about a mile to go with a pretty dangerous downhill with all the rocks sticking out and the two ruts that are hard to get out of once you're it them. Enjoy if you ever get to Northern Maine.
Go to Washburn, Maine and ask one of the locals where the Duntown Road is. When you've found the Duntown Road, it is a dead end road and turns into a woods road. When you've gotten to the end of the main road, go on the road that keeps you going straight. The offchutes will lead you elsewhere. Enjoy it as much as we do.
Summary: I love all those old roads ,they do not end. You could end up at ashland,beaver brook road ,(anywhere)Its got to be a rush on moutain bikes. we
Recommended Route: go up the portage trail from washburn,go until you get to the fire tower road and take the left to gardener creek or right to the end of dunntown road and loop around.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hey take the right at the end of dunntown road and go up the portage trail and see the old crashed bomber and then on to mouse island and then over to perham and then come down the rail road bed to washburn about 14 miles round trip

Summary: Trail offers something for everyone. 2 very nice downhills, mud, nice climbing, good flats. Not a single track, but the rutted fire road often forces you into one of 2 "single tracks". Many places are tight as branches have grown in over the years. Maybe a bit wetter than your liking, but an excellent mix of technical and mind numbing speed. Trail can be ridden in as little as a 1/2 hour, go twice if you like.
Recommended Route: Go to Washburn, ask locals for Dunntown road, follow road past last house, go up hill, stop at peak, ride straight through for 7 miles.
Other recommended trails in the same area: None that I know of.
