St. Francisville - The Beast

Average Rating:    (4.08 of 5)

Where the road takes its final left hand turn before the parking area, straight ahead toward the woods is where the trail begins. A warmup trail runs around the perimeter of the park facility and is about 1 mile.

This trail was designed by the same bloke who did the great trail system in Ruston, LA (Lincoln Parish Park), James Ramsaur.

Trail ducks in and out of the woods surrounding the park. 95% twisting technical wooded singletrack. Two short sections of double track. Many twisting steep rooty off-camber hills. Good elevation change for Louisiana. Great semi-technical downhills. Trail is well marked except over the last half mile where it converges 3 times at the same point on a creek bed.

Skills are required to ride this trail cleanly. Awesome trail! -pan

Summary:
Definitely one of the most difficult trails in South Louisiana, if not the most difficult. If you not in shape, I mean really in SHAPE, don't bother riding here. It will only discourage you! The Beast is everything in its name! 9/10 Technical, 10/10 Climbs, 8/10 Fast, and 9/10 Overall! This place is great for those who like Comite but looking for more! Well the beast takes it over the TOP! The Beast is Comite on Steriods and HGH combined for sure!
The trail is well maintained and a new area is open! Who ever is maintaining it-Hats off to them! Splendid!

Summary:
The Beast Trail is a 4.5 mile singletrack mountain biking/hiking trail within the West Feliciana Sports Park of St. Francisville, LA. Originally created by famed trail designer James Ramsaur, it was nicknamed "The Beast" by Baton Rouge mountain biker Charley Rome because of its very challenging double black diamond hills and switchbacks.

Coordinating the original trailbuilding efforts were former Lincoln Parish parks director Jay Ellington and West Feliciana Parish parks director Randy Albarez. James Ramsaur's other trail designs include the Tyler, TX State Park trail, the Eddie B. Jones "Monkey Trail" in Shreveport, and the Lincoln Parish Park trail. The Beast Trail is now officially maintained by the Tunica Trail Riders club, sponsored by West Feliciana Parish Parks and Recreation.

The Beast, due to its good drainage and high elevations, drains quickly and is usually ridable 6-12 hours after rainfall.

This trail is in great shape right now. Good (and difficult) climbs and very technical for the area. Get out and ride it.

Summary:
"The Beast" Trail was named by Charley Rome, an auspicious XC racer in the Baton Rouge area. It is the steepest and most technically difficult trail in Louisiana.

I help run the Tunica Trail Riders club, formed in February 2009, sponsored by West Feliciana Parish Parks and Recreation. Check out our website, www.TunicaTrails.org . The trail is in great shape now and getting better every weekend. Everybody whose spoken out about the trail conditions, here's your opportunity to do something about it: we could use volunteers. email info@tunicatrails.org .

Recommended Route:
Take Highway 61 North from Baton Rouge through St. Francisville. Pass through the town until you see the town's second Mobil station on the left. On the right under a liveoak is a banner that says "West Feliciana Sports Park." Turn right here and follow the road past a fire station and into the park. Turn right onto a gravel road before the bend in the drive and follow the Beast Trail red arrow signs.
