clarborn multi-use trail
5 reviews
 3.4 of 5

many differnt types of trails. surfaces:sand, hardpack, dirt. hilly with lots of trees. some good downhills, great single track. there is also a lot gravel roads to explore,if you want. Do not be intimidated by the amount of motorcycles, there are a lot of trails and they are seldom seen, and when they are you can hear them coming. There are 88 miles of marked trail(in a series of loops) last time I checked, I think they opened more(now about 120 miles worth). I wouldn't recomend this trail for beginers but everyone else should have a blast. (I get lost just about ever time I go, it's part of the fun)

Trail Directions
I-49 to forest hill/lecompe; take exit, go into forest hill(on right if coming from north, on left if coming from the south). Follow main road to the railroad track and take a right. Stay on this road until you see a sign(on left), it's a historical marker something about training base(possibly england training base). Stay in this road(it will go staight and make a right) until you see either a claborn multiple use trail sign or forest sevice road marker #258(its a brown sign post looking thing with 258 on it),{its on or right after the 2nd or 3rd hill right after you make the turn}. Follow this road, it will come to a 'y' go left. in about 3-5 minutes you'll be their. Go into the parking lot(gravel), you'll see the bathrooms on the left & there should be a sign thing with all the trails on it. P.S. there's usually a lot of motorcycles(dirt bikes), that's the place.

Summary:
3 trails looping from one camp-19 mile North loop,20 mile(says 27 on published brochure but 20 on signs and felt closer to 20) Woodworth loop, and 31 mile Boy Scout loop. Rode woodworth in its entirety-decently marked, wide enough for fourwheelers, sandy areas, some technical rooty areas, a few fun elevation changes, definitely worn by motorized vehicles-ruts add to the difficulty. Rode parts of Boy Scout-single track, significantly more difficult-sand, dense brush, more roots, drop-offs, deep puddles, more elevation change, not as well marked-attempted to shorten the loop with shorter marker alternates and got pretty lost. While there are many motorized vehicle riders, I think most like to stay closer to camp. Many take the shorter North loop, and only bikes on Boy Scout loop(no fourwheelers-i.e. over half the motorized riders out there and most of the newbs). Overall nice scenery, expect to get lost (or bring a gps), and some good challenges (for Louisiana at least).

Recommended Route:
For beginners take the Woodworth loop-short, easy enough, well-marked enough, and fewer motorized vehicles make it practical and fun. For more advanced riders looking for some challenge try the Boy Scout loop where you will likely be in the woods for quite a few hours without seeing anyone-parts of the trail looked like they hadn't been ridden on in a month.

Summary:
Rough and rutted out from 4wd four wheelers. Facilities were next to none. People were riding around camp all hours of the night. Trails were not well marked and lots of trail crossings. Got lost alot.

Recommended Route:
3 30 miles loops

Summary:
I used to ride these trails all the time, like daily. Lake Kincaid trails as well. the locals used to tell me that it was a very technical set of trails. NOT!!! these trails are good if you like climbing...long climbs. Not very technical at all though. A really good work out cardio wise though. Very long also you could here for two or three days and still find new trail. Most of the locals are hard to get to know though.....Very close knit group, not big on outsiders.

Recommended Route:
Same

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I would recommend you got to Houston and ride Memorial or Cypress.

Summary:
We were initially intimidated by all the dirt bikes and four-wheelers being raced around the large parking area by the trailhead, since the Claiborne trail system is designated multiple-use. However, apparantly, actually venturing out on the trail is too much for those zoom-boys, since we never encountered a single dirt bike out in the woods. Anyway, the trail is a load of fun. None of the climbs are too steep or too long and plenty of banked downhill turns add to the thrill factor. Take a compass, since getting turned around is part of the adventure at Claiborne. There are some sandy sections that at first slowed us down, but once we figured out how to finesse our way through, the sand just added to the challenge. Don't miss this area if you are from south or mid Louisiana.

Recommended Route:
We took about half of the "north loop" and part of the "south loop"

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lake Kincaid trails have less sandy areas.

Summary:
great trail, my favorite in La. I use it as a comparison for all other trails I ride. There are 2 side you can ride on. The one written, or if you go staight at the turn. Follow this road until you get to a parking lot(park the car). Go up the road(on bike) a bit and their should be a trail to your right, it's a more difficult single track type of trail compared to the other.

Recommended Route:
same as specified
