Big Limestone

After the first part the trail narrows to singletrack and follows the ridgetops. Turn left on Sheltowee trace and head for the dam. At the fork the downhill begins the longer downhill is the left fork, it is also doubletrack and very fast, the right fork is shorter but singletrack and very technical. at the bottom you can ride the trail up or take FS 16 back up.

Summary:
there is only about 6miles of actual single track on this segment also some fast old log road and double track and gravel road. You will pass some geat overlooks of Morehead, valley of Triplett creek and the Cave run lake. Before you get back to 16A turnoff there is a wide spot parking area on FS16 for Lockeegee Rock, you can ride out to it and hike up for a view back to the lake be carefull people have fallen!

Recommended Route:
Start at Amburgy Rocks off fs16 and make a loop back to your conveyance(vechicle) by taking a left when you reach the lake over look 6miles? there was a routered sign the last time I did this in y2k. ride the dozered road 2miles or so down to a powerlin that comes out on 801 then left to Twinn Knobs and fs16 intersection this is one mile on blacktop +/- take fs16 back to the fs16a and back to your transportation you'll be tired but it's a great long ride 18miles?

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Sheltowee between rt799 and 32 between Morehead and I-64 and the trailhead near Lewis County to Holly Fork Road segment one way.

Summary:
Good intermediate singletrack, gradual intermediate climb. May be some down trees. Forest Service had tornado damage cleaned out in 1997, but Sheltowee was slightly rerouted on the US 60 side of the hill.

Recommended Route:
Since the Big Limestone Trail is much too short (3.5 miles) to travel to just ride it, I'd suggest riding the Sheltowee Trace, starting at KY 801 at the Morehead Ranger Station/Visitor's Center, heading east up the hill, along the ridge, and down the other side to Triplett Creek toward US 60. Then, take a side trip on the Big Limestone Trail, either going or on the way back.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
For a weekend of trail riding, camping facilities available on other side of Cave Run Lake at Zilpo Campground. Buckskin Trail runs off campground and connects to large network of trails on south side of lake.

Ridden Trail:
Ridden Once

Reviewed by: Eric , from Lexington, KY

Summary:
The trail is a little deceiving at first. You'll start out on fireroad covered in large gravel. The gravel eventually ends and you start on a rather fast and mostly clear fireroad. It's pretty much overgrown and the grass between the 2 tracks hide a couple large rocks. The fire road turns into some tight single track about 1.5 miles in. The 1st descent is one of the most difficult on the whole trail with many washed out roots which force you to add speed on a pretty steep and rocky descent. The rocks were very loose so so expect a lot of skidding. At the bottom of this downhill you'll switch over to a rather steep and technical ascent. We only made it half way up before pushing set in. Lots of large rocks, roots, and logs in the way. Once you reach the top of this hill the rest of the trail is easy in comparison. At the 1st trail marker turn left towards the dam and visitors center. It's 4 miles and you'll pass one other trail marker. To get to the dam and visitors center keep right. It's a fast trail with some short but steep climbs, nothing impossible but a couple turns will have you holding your breath. At the visitors center and dam there is a drinking fountain inside. It's open on Saturdays till 6:00. There is supposed to be a fountain at the dam also but I didn't see it.

Recommended Route:
The directions at the top of this page are close, but the first few steps are wrong. 1st, when you take the Morehead exit from I64, turn right to head towards Morehead. Then turn right to 60, not left. The rest of the directons are coorect. Once you turn on to 1274 you'll have to watch closely for FS16. It's a gravel road less than 2 miles on 1274. The sign is small and in bad condition. It's just a little brown sign that says '16'. Finding it was the hardest part of the trip.
