Spillway Cycle Area (the Bowls)

made for motorcycles and atv's, but because of all of the traffic the trails are hard packed, including an area with 20 foot drops and climbs (the bowls).

Summary:
This place is a blast to "session" it isn't much good for XC types looking to put in some miles, but drop your seat and use your imagination, you'll work up a sweat quick enough hammering up to the jumps and climbing out of that ditch. Look for the local "kansas freeriders" and they'll show you whats up around the Lil' Apple.

Recommended Route:
Get down in the bowls and pick and choose your own drop in lines. There are several fun transfer drops coming off the side of the main ORV trails in the bowls. 3-7 foot drops to steep smooth transitions. Also, hit the big MX double in the bottom of the bowls with 3 levels of fun; small, medium, and big. The big ones gives enough hangtime for no footers no handers etc. 20 foot gap. Watch out for intoxicated mullets on 4 wheelers with beers in their hands and drunk chicks on the back wearing bikinis, they'll be coming in hot.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hit the linear park trails. Fast XC and in my opinion it's better than the Larrytown river trail and has some demented contraptions built for the HIGH end rider. Hmmmm...I wonder who the nut case is that built those things???? Hey, if you can't ride em' don't destroy them, just stand around and gape when you see someone you can.

Summary:
I moved to Washington, D.C. after finishing school at Kansas State and I have yet to find any riding in the east that is as fun as the bowls are in Manhattan. There are great drop-ins and jumps, with tons of speed, single track extending beyond the bowls for a couple of miles--everything you want out of a riding area. My advice is to either stay around the parking lot area and spend the day jumping out of first ravine or to ride to the top of the spillway and haul ass downhill to the bowls, back through the trail, etc. This is a roller coaster built for bikes and it is by far the most fun I've ever had on two wheels. Take care Manhattan.

Carnahan-It's beautiful, untouched, and just a great place to get away, especially in the fall. Be careful out there though, you're miles from help.

Summary:
This is the best course in the Manhattan area. When it is dry, it is an enourmous playground. There are steep decents into "bowls," as well as some very fast sections with woopdedoo's and even some good climbs. This place definately needs a couple of days to dry out after a rain though. When it is muddy, it is unrideable.
The bad part of this course are the motorcycles and ATV's. They can ruin a good day of riding because they are loud and do not have any regard for bicyclists. They are usually only a problem on weekends though.
This is not all that technically challenging, but it is a great time- Five for fun, three for technicality.

Recommended Route:
Start in parking lot and just follow one of the trails. By just riding around, you will eventually hit most of the trails. There are trails both across the street and next to the parking lot. The trails across the street are a good warm up. Be sure not to miss the spillway. To get there, go all the way down the steep hill (just keep going until you hit it) and take a right. When it dead-ends, go left down the small hill until you see a path that heads upstream.

Linear Park

Summary:
a great place to ride, but watch out for the motorcycle and atv riders. the trails are mostly hard packed and there are some sections with a lot of rocks. enjoy a great ride down from above the damn, it is definately my favorite part. 3 for difficulty 5 for fun.

Recommended Route:
for a good downhill ride, head across the dirt road you came in on and ride up above the damn. turn around at the top and enjoy a fast ride down. also, the bowls and some good climbs are to the south.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
linear park, off road park about 20 miles north
