Fast switchbacks and whoop-di-dos. Some fast technical, but nothing really too tough. Wooded area, the trails run along Deer Creek. Fun and fast. For info on other trails in the Topeka area see Dirt Rag Mag August 98 # 67 issue

Summary:
Nice flowing trails, sweet dropin's, quick switchbacks, and some rocky rooty single track. This trail has it all. I've been trying to ride this trail once a week when I can. It definitely tests my noob ability. There are some good climbs and some nice downhill that will really test your brakes too!
As Slakjak mentioned below it is truly a Jekyl and Hyde set of trails.

The trail maintenance team is really working on revamping old abandoned trails and making new ones all the time. I rode one today that one of the gentlemen just completed recently.

Give this trail a go it's a blast every time!

Recommended Route:
Take an immediate left after passing the green trail signage and follow the trail with the black arrows pointing the way. Then ride the trail going south toward the south west side of the big wooden bridge. It will take you on the more rocky trails on the south side of the park. While its more technical there and you do more climbing it's a pretty fun ride over some creek beds and wooden bridges.

Make sure and ride through and around the old dairy barn for some neat technical riding.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Governor's or Menniger's, Landon Nature Trail, Lawrence River Trails.

Summary:
This was my first ride out there but I do plan on making it weekly. I thought it was a Jekyll and Hyde. Nice and easy mixed in with challenging and difficult. There are portions where you can really open up and then there are those places where you are almost stopped trying to get around a corner. I'm pretty new at this trail stuff but if I can master the techniques needed to ride this trail, I think I will feel comfortable anywhere.

Recommended Route:
Will certainly try to follow the recommended posted route next time. I could tell that the trail favored that direction. It is easy to go off a log jump downhill but impossible to climb over it going uphill.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Some of the trails at the Governor's residence and the adjoining State Park have similar technical challenges but I like the Dornwood surfaces better.

I accidentally hit submit before I typed my review, so here goes:

I noticed that no one has posted a review for this trail in quite some time so I thought I had better say something. Dornwood trails is about the best singletrack you can find directly in Topeka besides out at Mennigers. I try and ride this trail about twice a week. I haven't seen anyone else there this year, so it makes me wonder if not too many people know about it.

Let me tell you, these trails are maintained very well, and they are as fun as you want to make them. There are no long crazy climbs or white knuckle downhills to speak of, but most of the trails to the South are fast and flowy.... roller coaster style. I always have a great time out there. *A note of caution though, during this time of year (August,Sept.) there have been a massive amount of spiderwebs through the trails. (We need more people riding out here to clear them!) So beware of the spiders as they are thick.

My favorite sections are to the South. When you park at the trail head, you go past the area with concrete blocks in a large circle, past the small paved area, and the entrance is to your Southeast into the trees. From there just follow the trails around and you'll end up Southwest of the ball diamonds.

Besides Dornwood, I also frequent Mennigers/Governor's Mansion trails which are also quite good for this area.

Summary:
I WAS LIVING IN THE AREA FOR A YEAR AND WAS LOOKING FOR A PLACE CLOSE BY TO KEEP THE LEGS FROM GOING FLABBY. SOME FUN CAN BE HAD ON THESE TRAILS IF YOU KEEP A HIGH PACE. LOOK OUT AT STREAM CROSSINGS AFTER RAIN!!! YOU CAN RIDE THROUGH THEM BUT THE DEPTH MAY SURPRISE YOU.

Recommended Route:
PARK AT THE BASEBALL FIELDS, GO THROUGH OLD BUILDING DOWN SMALL DECLINE AND HAVE FUN. THERE IS SEVERAL ROUTES YOU CAN CHOOSE, BUT THEY ALL END UP BACK AT THE PARKING AREA.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
GOVS. HOUSE, SHUNGA, CLINTON LAKE, LAKE PERRY.
