Shunga Creek Dirt Trail
4 reviews
2.25 of 5
The trail meanders through the woods beside the creek and has several branches. There is an area where bikers have built numerous jumps and overall dificulty ranges from easy to moderate. There are also more trails south of the paved Shunga Trail and north of the Veterans Hospital grounds beginning just east of the soccer fields there. These trails are grassy and a lot more work to pedal.
Exit I 470 at Gage Blvd and drive north. Pass 29th Street, and over the Shunga Creek bridge, and turn right into the parking lot and unload. Ride back south towards the bridge on Gage, and the trail head is to the left.
Summary: sure this path is a sidewalk, and is not an mtb trail. the beauty of it is is that the city keeps adding to this thing and there are branches of it all over town, many of them are easily accessible to others by a short ride over city streets while some are accessible by creek or river levees. there are sections that're accessible from north kansas ave. near garfield park, as well as from topeka blvd. there is also a section that i saw last week that runs from billard park to santa fe park. i plan to ride lots more of this thing in the winter just to see where it goes. i've ridden all over the south central part of this town on this thing, and east of the kansas expocenter you can fly, because it's under utilized there. i'd say it's over utilized out west. lots of strollers, kids on training wheels, people pushing loved-ones in wheelchairs, elderly walkers, etc. from what i've seen lately there's a dirt option when traveling west from the brown v. boe building when the pavement finally ends out near 25th and kansas streets. i recently rode a new section that is accessible by taking a left at the northeast corner of scott magnet school, and going onto the shunga creek levee, and going east from there. there are other easter sections that i've yet to explore, but i plan to do that now since the rain is probably making the trails too wet to ride in good conscience. i'll keep posting here with what i find. it used to be kind of lame, and this thing is really turning out to be pretty exciting!
Recommended Route: follow your nose.
Other recommended trails in the same area: there are other trails but you should find them yourself. if you want to ride with everyone else there are trails that "most" people ride, then there are some hidden gems, where you might not see anyone. i like that kind of trail. that's where i go, and have been going for nearly 35 years to ride bikes. it's there if you're not AFRAID to look for it.

Summary: NOT MUCH TO REVIEW. IT'S DIRT, IT'S FLAT, IT'S KANSAS. KEEPS YOU IN SHAPE IF RIDE 20 MPH, BUT DIRT IS BETTER THEN NO DIRT.
Recommended Route: PARK AT SOCCER FIELDS AND FIND DIRT NATURE TRAIL BY BIKE PATH, MAKE LEFT.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: I'm very curious and that is what compelled me to drive down here from Lawrence one day. This is a very easy and smooth dirt singletrack that runs along the creek. From what I found, it ran about 1.5 miles before it petered out into a mess of weeds. Absolutely nothing remotely technical, I counted about one rock. Some kids are building a small BMX course along the side of the trail, I wouldn't try it on your mountain bike. If you are into BMX you may to check these out. There are some cool limestone rocks to practice trials on near the trailhead. I had the most fun on these. I would recommend this for a ride with your girlfriend, otherwise don't waste your time. I give it one tire for the trial rocks, one tire for the kid's BMX park and one more tire for it being dirt.
