Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Weekend Warrior Summary: Ridden Once...YMMV. I was very disappointed with this trail.
It seems there *may* be an entrance fee of $4.20. Not too sure if the nice old lady at the ranger station knew what she was talking about; but, I paid the fee thinking I didn't have to. (I stopped there to ask for directions. Doom on me. She didn't even know where the MTB trails were. She pointed me in the direction of the Hiking trails which clearly state, "Hiking Only". After I found them I drove back and nicely let her know.)
The 'advanced' trail isn't very long and what makes it advanced, AFAICT, was the many small rocks littering the trail - not once did I find a section that I had to look at first before attempting. It was all completely passable and easy.
The other trail I found was nothing more than where a brush-hog mower had cut a swath through the swamp. They didn't even completely cut the whole path as the last 50 yards or so were just mashed down weeds. It looked like there were some thorn bushes that had been cut and, since being cut, are now laying horizontal in the perfect position to puncture that new inner tube you just replaced. (I'm running tubeless; but, I feel for those riding with tubes. Riders Beware.)
For all the work I did I rode about 2.5 miles of trail. I'm thoroughly disappointed. Recommended Route: If you just want to get a quick couple of laps in then take the brush-cut path. Truthfully, I think you'll get more out of it than trying the boring advanced trail. At least the beginner trail has some length.

Weekend Warrior Summary: I rode this trail for the first time Labor Day weekend, 2004. The beginner loop is nothing more than a bush-hogged path. The intermediate loop is much more intense, with ups and downs. I was rained out of the advanced before I got the chance. I do recommend the trail, because it has natural obstacles. As for the other reviews that mention the need for cutting the path, I disagree. If you open your eyes, you can follow the trail. That's part of the difficulty along the ride. I would like to see some more trails at this lake as there is plenty of room. Recommended Route: I recommend the intermediate loop, 4 miles long, on the Eagle Rock Mountain Bike Trail. Other recommended trails in the same area: For the advanced rider, the Table Mound hiking trail will be great.

Cross Country Rider Summary: I rode this trail last summer and was disappointed, see the next review. However I went to give it another chance this week because I was in the area. It has improved greatly. My sincerest thanks to the people who maintain it. The trails were cut with a brush hog leaving a nice 5 foot wide path. There is not much challenging until you get to the small singletrackk cut in the ridge. To get there just go up the fire road, then it is on the right. This section is difficult and fun. Alot of tight turns, hard climbs, and rocks make a helmet a very good idea. Still look out for the deer. Recommended Route: Go down the dam along the east side of the spill way. The more adventurous can park in th elot to the west of the spillway, ride across just below the dam and follow the narrow path that is along the edge of the spillway. Other recommended trails in the same area: For the advanced riders looking for more fun and challenge, go to the memorial overlook (It is on top of that big hill overlooking the spillway) and try riding the hiking trails. Be considerate of the hikers though as we already have our own trail here where hikers do not get in the way.

, from Topeka Summary: This trail could be so much better. I know a lot of work goes into maintaining trails but this one really needs help. There are a few parts on the advanced trail that are impassable without dismounting. The intermediate trail could be fun and worthwhile for beginners but I could just barely tell where there was a trail. It seriously needs to be cut. I had to stand out of my seat just to see what was coming in front of me on parts. Look out for the deer!! They are abundant and I almost got clipped by one that jumped across the trail right in front of me. This trail is fine if you are going to be in the area and don't expect to much of a challenge. If you are not going to be in Independence then don't bother to rack your bike up for the ride until somebody else indicates that this trail has had some work done to it. Recommended Route: Just follow the signs in the park directing you to the spillway channel. Park on top of the dam and ride down if you like. Trail is to the east of the spill way channel. Trails are marked to show the best direction to go. Other recommended trails in the same area: 23rd street in Pittsburg. I also had fun just riding around this beautiful state park.

, from Wichita Summary: Not really worth making too much of an effort to ride unless you're a complete beginner. I have relatives that live in the area so I'll occasionally ride it when I'm there visiting, but I wouldn't recommend making a special trip to ride it. There are trails marked for beginners, intermediate and advanced, but the advanced isn't really very exciting or technical. Some rocks, some roots, a few short downhills. The advanced section is also extremely short. I generally just ride back and forth on the advanced section for a while until I get bored. The easy and intermediate sections are not even worth wasting your time on unless you're there with the kids. It seems like there is room to expand the advanced section further along the ridge to make it longer but I guess there must be a reason why they haven't. Recommended Route: Follow the signs Other recommended trails in the same area: Camp Horizon is the sheeiiit.
