Fancy Creek State Park

The trails are primarily for horseback riding and hiking but they are _great_ trails. These are the best set of trails I have been on in Kansas. They are quite challenging- some very steep climbs, some great downhills and some insanely technical sections. We rode here for the first time last weekend and were just blown away! There are two or three trails on the left side and three or four on the right side of the park. They are all great. The only bad part are the leaves. We all took a couple of endo's because we couldn't see rocks on the trail. I think we may go out next weekend and rake the trail some. I wish I had gone here sooner because this is an awesome trail!

Trail Directions
From Manhattan: Take 113N (past Walmart) until you get to 77. Take 77N until you hit 16. Go East on 16 (go right). You will see Tuttle Creek Lake in front of you. Go over the bridge. Directly on the far side of the bridge is the park. 16 cuts right through it. The first road you get to is the entrance to Fancy Creek State Park. You can either take the left or the right, they both have great trails. It takes about 25-35 minutes from Manhattan.

Summary:
Short and steep up and downs.
Very tight unpredictable singletrack combined with the grunt climbs make it a slow loop. Not for beginners.
Some nice stationary rocks make for a few very technical areas. Otherwise it's all about getting yourself up and down and through the turns.
Take a break at 4.20 hill and take in the view of Tuttle Creek Lake. Then an easy 1/4-mile downhill takes you back to the trailhead.

Summary:
Most of you guys are talking about Randolph State Park, to the east of Fancy Creek. I've ridden both in the last 3 days. I only live about 25-30 miles from both. For Fancy Creek, the length is approximately 4.5 miles. It is definitely not for the weak of heart. The first 2.5 or so miles contain 4-5 steep hills (I know because a sign warns you of each one). After the first 2.5 miles, the trail isn't as steep but there are a lot of switchbacks. There are plenty of good-sized rocks. I rode this course about a week ago and endoed about 4 times but yesterday I didn't at all. Ride smart and don't be afraid to get off your bike and hike-a-bike, this course will do it to you. The Tuttle Creek brochure touts this as one of the best mountain biking trails in the state of Kansas and I'd have to agree.

Recommended Route:
For Fancy Creek, follow the trail but go to the left trailhead when starting out.

Summary:
The first 2-2.5 miles are the toughest, due to the hills. If you can ride the whole thing without stopping, mad props. The trail has some technical spots that are fun to try and its hardly ever busy. Bring some water because you will get pretty cashed on this trail. At about 4.20 miles there is a nice lookout over Tuttle Creek that is a good spot to take a safety break and catch your breath. I'd say this trail is one of the better ones in the Manhattan area and makes a good weekend ride. I usually like to "get Fancied" once or twice a month, sometimes more. If you're not in shape, or did some heavy drinking the night before, you'll be hurting on this one. If you can muscle through the first half, you'll be okay from then on. It's a nice little downhill bit from the lookout to the parking lot where its nice to have a few Fat Tire's waiting.

Recommended Route:
The other reviews sound like they are for Randolph State Park. Fancy Creek is just before the bridge on the left (not over the bridge). You'll see a sign for the bike trail on the right. Park in the lot at the bottom and head out to make the loop in a counter-clockwise direction (left of the kiosk).

great medium to above average technical ride, ride it fast for a heart pounder. if you don't start in the parking lot you get a longer down hill

Recommended Route:
