Ridden Trail: Every few months

Cross Country Rider Summary: Like it has been said, this trail is all wide, and well ridden by horses. That being said, there is most defintly a 'single track' trail worn in from the horse use, thats the perfect width for bikes. The terrain is rolling, with all climbs easily done. They can be steep though. There are sections that are very sandy, so be aware. The terrain is purrrfect for some true singletrack though. And this area is large enough that a dedicated group could put in 25-30 miles of trail. The Iowa DNR seems oblivious to this idea though. Recommended Route: Park-n ride! There really is no 'best' loop. Other recommended trails in the same area: Decorah, Yellow River, Pikes Peak St Park, FDR trails

, from Charles City, Iowa Summary: It's all been said already, I wasn't really too happy to have driven all the way here to ride bumpy grass and sand and rocks and horse poopie, plus I got a broken chain. Come on DNR, let people make some singletrack! Other recommended trails in the same area: Decorah

, from Greekey Summary: What these trails lack in technical, they make up for in length. You can ride forever, and there are really steep climbs and downhills. The trails are wide and rolling. Watch out for horse shit. Recommended Route: The whole thing is pretty fun and can be fast if it's dry. Stay away from some of the horse trails cause they can bet rough. Other recommended trails in the same area: Backbone State Park, and Sugar Bottom.

, from Ames, IA Summary: I've only ridden there at races. Sandy, which is bad. A couple of killer hills, which is good. Too damned bumpy, which is bad. A swim in the river after you're done is great. The terrain is pretty good, but the trails don't have much to offer for technical fun. And they would be much faster if they weren't so damned bumpy from the horses.

, from Winona,MN Summary: I've ridden Volga for some years now and I'd have to say it's one of the best trails in Iowa. While it lacks in singletrack it makes up in distance, sand, climbs, and decents. It is somewhat bumpy to some, but if you learn how to ride bumps it's fun. You have to push a bigger gear and go fast. If you go slow it will be really bumpy-just like taking a boat out on a lake. Go fast and you won't feel the waves as much. Recommended Route: Just get on and go. Other recommended trails in the same area: This is area is the place to go in Iowa. I recommend staying in Decorah. Why? You have a ton of fun short quick singletrack to ride there after a long day at either The Volga or over in Yellow River (not far). Plus Decorah has some of the best gravel roads to ride as well.
