Cross Country Rider Summary: A few rocks, roots, and log crossings, trail goes along the river at times. I believe there has since been a new short loop added since the last reviews. A good quick place to ride after work, or if you are traveling down I-35 because the trail can be conviently accessed from behind the southbound I-35 rest stop just south of Story City. Other recommended trails in the same area: Mc Farland Park and Peterson Park.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

, from Ames Summary: The first two or three miles of this trail are sweet. Relative to Iowa trails, I'd probably give them 4.5 stars. Rocks, roots, stream crossings, technical fun. If you take the trail all the way to Story City, it gets much less technical, but is a nice change-of-pace way to get some distance (20 mi. round trip). To get to Story City, head West on the gravel road once you get out of the single track. It turns north, and you're on gravel for probably 2 or 3 mi. The little canoe accesses on the left are not trailheads - they go nowhere. Take the gravel road 'til it ends at a 'T', the trailhead for the next section is right there. Doubletrack and wide-singletrack mix, not too fun, but a couple of nice places and some decent distance. Kind of neat riding through the open rangeland. 3 stars for this section. Recommended Route: To ride there from MacFarland Park, take the 'prarie' trails toward the northeast corner of the park. You'll get to the NE corner, and you'll be on a north-south double track parallel to the interstate. Take this north, to the gravel road 'T'. Head left (west), past the little 1875 church. Stay on this gravel road until just before the bridge - the trailhead is on your right just before the bridge.

, from Des Moines, IA Summary: Lots of rocks and quick corners, two steep climbs/downhills. A prarie on top that sucks unless you like riding on a grass trail. This is a great trail, but can be very dangerous not because of the terrain, but other riders and hikers. Some of the turns are sharp and blind due to tall plants, so watch out!. Recommended Route: make sure you go past the bridge to the small parking lot. *don't turn before the bridge into the park where there is a pretty sign for the mill.

, from Ames, IA Summary: Great trails for being in the middle of Iowa. The trail is located long the Skunk River Greenbelt, so the trail has it's hills and rutts. There is room for expansion, if the Story County Conservation Board would approve, however - not likely. Over all it's a great place to get out and ride. Other recommended trails in the same area: Peterson's Pits
