MacFarland Park

Great place to head to if you're in the area. Lots of hills and a variety of riding environments. Ride through dense forest, along a river, over & through creeks, in amongst a prairie, and down around a lake. Diffuculty ranges depending upon the area you are in.

Summary:
Only in Iowa does this count as mountain biking. Very very short climbs and smooth buffed trails. There are some railroad ties and slightly rocky sections. So take what you can get.

If you follow the road out north through the prairie you can connect to some other single track along the Skunk river. Bring your bug juice though. Damn mosquitos are like suicide bombers.

Recommended Route:
Park by the center. Then ride down and do Peterson Pits. Then on the way back up take the single track on the left (off the road inbetween). Ride everything in the park. Twice. Three times. Then head out the road to the north through the prairie and ride some the single track back there. Twice. Then get bored and go home. :) Iowa

Summary:
This trail is not very technical, but it has a decent mix of short climbs. It's a nice trail to come out and ride loops on if you're training hard - you can definitely get a strong workout. Watch out for hikers, especially in the early evening hours. Be friendly to 'em.

Recommended Route:
If you're riding out from Ames, a nice route is 13th street east to Stage Coach Road. Take Stage Coach north until you hit the pavement, then head east to the "T" (Dayton Rd). North on Dayton to the "T" at the bottom of the hill, then east to the park.

Summary:
Lots of ups and downs, with quick turns. Watch out for steps on some of this hills. The path where designed for foot use, but they allow bikes on them now. This gives a little more technical ride, but you need to be more carefull. Great place to go in central Iowa!

Recommended Route:
Stay in the forest, the prairie can get long and borring.
