Hartman Reserve

Singletrack similar to George Wyth State Park... handlebar width tree gates with fun winding turns and burms... beware, this area floods frequently so trails can be difficult to find and are sometimes poorly maintained... make a day of it and ride both Wyth State Park and the Hartman Reserve.
Geographically located across the Cedar River from George Wyth State Park... don't drive or ride to the Nature Center to ride because bikes are not allowed South of the paved trail... instead find Lookout Park one block North of Grand Avenue, park there and head into the woods to the East of the park... you'll immediately find technical singltrack (wash outs are bad) follow the road towards the river, go around or under the yellow gate onto a gravel road... from this point you explore.
Summary: Like everyone else has said, it's pretty similar to George Wyth. Lots of pretty flat and fast singletrack, some gets kinda tight and twisty, a few logs to hop over, some sandy and rocky spots as well. I rode it for the first time when it was slightly wet...too bad, otherwise I could have gotten some decent speed through the corners there. I had ridden out there once before, but didn't find much trail. This time, I explored a little more and found some pretty good trails. Not the most challenging or technical, but fun nonetheless and its always nice to have some variety. The only drawback is that its a little further (only about a mile, actually) from UNI's campus than George Wyth, but definitely worth the ride! Also, I can see why this area would flood easily, being pretty low and close to the river. But it's some good riding when it's dry!
Recommended Route: Coming from Cedar Falls on the paved trail, ride until you come to a road crossing. Go around the yellow gate to the left and take the first trail you see to the left. Or continue on until you get to a picnic shelter on your left and take the dirt paths behind that and explore from there.
Other recommended trails in the same area: George Wyth, Greenbelt (if you like flat and fast, and want a good cardio!), and Ulrich, for a challenge.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: These trails are tight, open, tight, technical, bombing, sandy, and so on. Basically, the trails aren't too hard, but there are some hard spots. Mostly built near the river bottoms, there is a great propensity for flooding in the spring, and when they dry out, it is next to impossible to clean up all of the sticks and larger logs. The one-way trail is about 3 miles long. From there, there is a technical, short hill to climb, only to be rewarded with a WAY fun downhill back down.
Recommended Route: NW, from hwy. 218 NOTE! The trails can only be ridden North of the paved trail. The South side is a reserve, and is off-limits to bikes.
Other recommended trails in the same area: George Wythe State Park, SugarBottom, Decorah trails, and coming soon...an addition to this network.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: These trails are very similar to George Wyth's trails, not too difficult but technical enough to be challenging at high speeds... if you're a singletrack snob like myself who does not enjoy riding wide/boring/grassy/sandy trails this is a place worth checking out... unfortunately the area is easily flooded and trails are at times under water or too muddy... check the local bike shops for current trail conditions and while you're at it tell them do some trail maintenance and keep their local trails in good shape... so other than some occasionally sloppy trails these trails are great... p.s. The local bike shops put on a fun race in George Wyth pretty much every August, check it out...
Recommended Route: same as above
Other recommended trails in the same area: George Wyth, Green Belt, Hickory Hills.

Summary: The trail is single track and difficult. Rain and floods have eroded many of the trails and made them very difficult to ride.
