Hey you Indy 96th Street riders....this trails for you!! A roller coaster singletrack trip through the woods. May be the most popular MTB trail in the state. Moderate aerobic level because of the climbs. Eight mile in & 8 miles back out. Contact richries@hsonline.net for more info.
SR 135 south from Nashville. When SR 135 goes left at Story, go straight onto the paved county road (Elkinsville Rd.) stay on this road, after it changes to gravel, the road makes a sharp right up a steep hill. Parking is on the left where the road goes right.
Summary: This is a fast comparatively easy trail about 8.5 miles long. It is basically an out and back, but you can continue to the larger Hickory Ridge trail complex by riding a mile or two on dirt roads. There seems to be a great deal of confusion about the naming of these trails. Some people think this trail is also known as the Knobstone trail. It isn't. The Knobstone trail is a large trail complex dozens of miles away located near Salem Indiana. I think this is a good all around trail. A little climbing, a few mild technical sections and very fast. The location is pretty remote, with few services nearby. Although not as bad as Hickory Ridge, horses have pulverized some low points into mud bogs. There are some downed trees this year that haven't been cleared. You are required to purchase a trail pass to use this and other Hoosier National Forest trails. They are $3 and the nearest place to get one is Crouch's Market in Pikes Peak several miles away. You will be fined $20 if you are caught without one.
Recommended Route: The route is pretty linear, although there are some side trails worth checking out.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hickory Ridge, Brown County State Park

Summary: This is quite simply one of the fastest trails that I have ridden. If you are looking for a technical ride go elsewhere. On the other hand, If you are looking for a two to three hour ride during which you cover nearly 20 miles this is for you. When I rode it there were two log jumps, both easy. The rest consists of ups and downs with some climbs long enough to really get your blood pumping (especially the first). If it is warm be sure to bring your bug repellent as whenn you stop the woods are literally buzzing with flies. The key is to go fast enough to drop them.
Recommended Route: Start at either end and go to the other. It is not a loop.

Summary: This is a pretty good ride. Reserve a day for it though. It is in the middle if nowhere. The initial climb is a great warm up, and the rest is pure fun. Take a break at the turn around and converse with the other bikers, one will be along shortly. It sometimes isn't very well maintained which is disappointing for a pay ride, trees down and all, but is still worth the trip. The ending is the best, test your bikes suspension and have fun. Once your ride is finished, drop by the Story Inn for some homemade beer and good food....best way to end a great ride.

Summary: Not what I expected for some reason. Beautiful trail ridden on a beautiful day, fast and hilly. What surprized me was the lack of technical challenges, no tight track, no log piles etc. Good time with lots of speed.

Summary: If you want speed, and to find out if your bike flexes, handles well, or if your tires are grippers, this is the place. Big Ring 80% of the time, you can avg 10Mph, and spike out to 30Mph. A rolling speedfest of a trail with nearly no suprises other than a couple of relatively tight switchbacks (due to the speed) and a few off-camber corners.(I think there was one log to cross). On the return trip, when you are friggin flying back to the parking lot, remember that root section on the side hill esp if it is wet, and for the sake of every one, look well ahead as this is the place where the slow cimbers are walking or putting, and you are going about 27 mph. Be aware. There is no room for runoff as it is singletrack and on a sidehill. If this place had a few nice long table top jumps in it it would be perfect, otherwise it is pretty damn fun! This is the place to bring your FR/DH bike to wring out or take your trailbike/xc racer up to full bore. You can ride it on a HT easily, it is smooth and fast. Dont for get your permit (and water)at the little country store before Story! $3 per day. Note: drainage here is excellent, always drys quickly due to peak position on ridge (wind, runoff) Safe bet. Worth the drive 2hr+ from Cincy. Any level rider can tackle this trail, all that will vary is how fast and for how long. The initial climb is a great warm up and oh coming back down at the end is a mighty reward...!
Recommended Route: From the parking area up the initial climb, then left onto the trail, there are not other spurs or off-chutes from there. Keep an eye ahead for oncoming! You will go about 8 miles and come to a natural stopping place with log benches and such. At this point you can go farther, but so far we have always turned back.
Other recommended trails in the same area: 135 is one of the region's best rally driving roads of all time, but there is no room for error!
